Encountered with this term, society immediately yearns to associate the condition with being different, difficult, antisocial and perhaps even abnormal. Admittedly, before I investigated further into the topic of Autism, I may have also habitually tried to fit autistic people under a label. Essentially, none of these words justly describe the true nature of autism. For the most part, the public generally believes that autistic people have trouble communicating effectively and misconceptions such as these may result in the alienation of autistic children (National Autistic Society, n.d.). The newscast featured footage of Andre McCollins, an autistic student at Judge Rotenberg Center at the time, being restrained and repeatedly shocked over the period of several hours, whilst multiple ‘skilled, experienced, high level supervisors’ (Judge Rotenberg Center, n.d.) overlooked the treatment. It was later revealed by the Center that the shock treatment was necessary as Andre McCollins had refused to take his coat off when the case was taken to court. Undeniably, I was slightly confused about the question on the blender, hence me asking the class teacher what she had meant. It was then clarified that the student disliked the noise made by a blender and in the hope of preventing the spitting, the blender would be turned on. I recognised this method as a form of ABA and it sparked enquiries about the consequences of such a treatment and ethical concerns since the discomfort throughout the punishment was clear to see from the boy’s facial expressions.
This combination of personal experience and research has led to me deciding to use my dissertation to explore exactly what Autism is and to investigate whether ABA therapy has more adverse effects on the future of the autistic children compared to the beneficial effects. I am aware that there may be weaknesses in my project due to time constrictions and that not all of the questions surrounding my chosen topic will have been answered by the end of this project as there is also a word limit I am restricted
