Annotated Bibliography In this day and age there is a lot of controversy over whether it is still necessary for all children to receive vaccinations, and whether vaccines are responsible for developmental disorders in children. There are some that say parents that don’t vaccinate their children should be jailed, however there are parents that allege vaccinations have led to developmental disorders in their children, and in some cases even death. Weisberg tells how the disease is easily spread in hot weather and close contact with others. She explains how Polio is transferred by human contact, how it lodges in the throat and intestines, then comes out of people in their body secretions, through sweat, saliva and stool. Weisberg explains that Polio is an enterovirus and can be divided into three separate forms. 1. Non-paralytic, which acts like Meningitis. 2. Bulbar, which affects the brain, breathing, and blood pressure. 3. Paralytic, which is the crippler (Weisberg, 2007). Weisberg tells of Polio in its height in 1954, how there were over 35,000 reported cases, and 4 of 5 were paralytic, 1 of 7 ended up being permanently handicap, and 1 of 15 died (Weisberg, …show more content…
Summary: In this article published in 2000, featured by WebMD, it talks about the link between childhood autism and the MMR (Measles, Mumps, and Rubella) cocktail vaccine. It gives examples of children like Eric Gallup, a 15 month old child that received the cocktail shot. After a short amount of time his parents noticed a change in his behavior and his ability to communicate. Eric received the vaccine in 1986 and in 1989 was diagnosed with autism. Not all children have a bad reaction to the vaccine, but many parents are calling for an investigation into the possible link. Autism is a developmental disability in which children can have problems with social interaction and communication. It is most common in boys and can be detected early on. The true cause of autism is still undiscovered. The president of the National Vaccine Information Center thinks the MMR vaccine could cause a regressive form of autism. “In which a child will take a downturn in development after receiving the shot (WebMD, 2000, p. 1).” The NVIC is a non-profit organization that was formed by parents that have had their children adversely affected by vaccinations. Nearly all US Health departments deny any link between the MMR cocktail and autism, but the CDC has decided to conduct a study in Atlanta to further investigate the
