Theme
Munro’s writing often focuses on the lives and experiences of ordinary people. However, this does not mean that her themes are simple or lack complexity. When delivering your IOC it is essential that you can thoroughly relate the passage to the theme of the text. When analysing theme you should consider the following:
● What was Munro’s purpose in writing the story?
● What deep ideas or issues about human nature does Munro explore in her story?

● What significance do names have for other characters and for us?
● How does the order in which we learn the history of a character influence us?
● Are the characters consistent in their actions? Adequately motivated? Plausible?
Narrator
Over time Alice Munro has revealed that certain aspects of her texts have been inspired by personal events. This does not imply that she is narrating the short story. Although the narrator may have similar opinions or outlook as Munro, it is important not to mistake the narrator as Munro. Remember that point of view and narrator are tools created and used by Munro in order to tell the story in a certain way. Consider the following questions when analyzing narrator and point of view: ● What point of view and narration does the story use?
● Is it consistent in its use of this point of view? If shifts are made, are they justified?
● What are the advantages of the chosen point of view? Does it furnish any clues as to the purpose of the story?
● Is the narrator reliable or unreliable? Does he/she have a limited knowledge or understanding of characters and events in the story? Does the narrator know almost everything about one character or every character, including inner
