Reading the title, Insert Flap “A” and Throw Away, of Perelman’s essay, I was immediately reminded of a tiny telescope model my younger brother purchased. which I was instructed to help him construct, along with the frustration and anger it brought me. The fate of the telescope model was as described in Perelman’s title, the trash. Through the title, the author creates a connection between the reader and himself, emphasizing that he is only human, therefore he can only follow such meaningless directions so closely. He explains that everyone must conform. in other words, “tabs, C, D, E, F, G, H, J, K and L [must fit] into slots C, D, E, F, G, H, J, K and L”, and a person is not allowed to arrange themselves any other way (Perelman). His weakest arguments I believe are his attempts to show that people are all working against him, for example, his wife, asking him to not “start making excuses”, along with the factory worker who, in his opinion, punched out the wrong design on purpose (Perelman). His most effective argument in the essay must be his overall argument that people are confined to set steps and are trained to be physically unable to think beyond this scope. Perelman microscales his situation making the doctor represent the rest of the world and himself, a single person who refuses to be confined by the words on paper. The author’s metaphor, likening the doctor to a “leech” is appropriate as the doctor, or in this case, the world, is sucking the creativity out of Perelman and are trying to force him to follow the world-renowned and accepted

Edith Wharton’s Ethan Frome is structured specifically to create an aura of suspense and thrill. The prologue acts to give a fleeting insight to the mysterious character of Ethan Frome, but intentionally neglects to offer an explanation as to why he is in his current condition, thus keeping the audience on their toes. Such strategies used by Wharton create an overall effect of mystery and confusion until the very end. The switch of point of view to third person omniscient puts readers in a front row view of the lives of Ethan, Mattie, and Zeena, but prohibits them from knowing the characters’ true thoughts, keeping the level of suspense high. Wharton establishes a sorrowful mood in the novella by paralleling the weather with Ethan’s feelings and situation.…

Riveting, inspiring and a truly remarkable plot; Bryce Courtenay’s novel, The Power of One, leaves readers on the edge of their seats as they stride through early 1900s South Africa in the eyes of young Peekay, where war and discrimination remain as alive as possible as our protagonist continues their journey of unique life experiences that shape him into who he becomes. After having read the novel, I can undoubtedly exclaim that this novel possesses a great amount of life lessons and themes which the author expressed in a very realistic manner, making my experience with the novel quite memorable. Therefore, despite the few struggles I faced as I read the novel such as the length and lack of personal connection with the character’s and their…
