The Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI) discusses that students enrolled in college are more likely to consume alcohol than their peers than do not attend college. They report that 1700 college students die yearly due to alcohol. The increasing number of college students drinking has resulted in higher incidences of unprotected intercourse and most rapes on college campuses are alcohol related. “Compulsive Alcohol and High Risk Behaviors of College Students” examines the relationship between heavy drinking and other risky behaviors. Nine hundred college students participated in the study over three campuses and the results indicate that heavy alcohol consumption is also associated with hazardous behaviors including illicit drug use and increased sexual behavior. From these results, it can be determined that there is a need for programs addressing these high risk behaviors. It would be helpful if the authors provided ideas on how to alleviate the issue. The study does, however, provide relevant statistical information on the range of other behavior that alcohol abuse leads to. This is a good introductory article on the issue of binge drinking.
