1. William and Sternthal both agree that the area in which you pertain to, especially if it consists of minority groups such as those as African American in this case, creates a sense of residential racial segregation and there for does not allow equal resources and services as those who are more privileges or pertain to a higher class. The example used by Fuentes-George was that of the water crisis that occurred in Flint Michigan, and he explains how Flint’s structure is based on racist decisions exemplified by the neglect from government officials and others to help keep the water clean and the ignorance towards these peoples’ health as compared to other cities in the country. 2. Institutional racism refers to marked as being one of the main…
Proliferation of Institutional Racism In “Biased Lending Evolves, and Blacks Face Trouble Getting Mortgages” from The New York Times (2015), Rachel Swarns tells a story describing how banks are still practicing a form of redlining, this time targeting Blacks and Hispanics. Even though they may seem unrelated, this may lead to health disparities for Hispanics in the future. In the past, as outlined by Massey and Denton (1993), Blacks were the only racial group that experienced residential segregation.…
Her research concerning climate has begun a revolution for colleges to begin to take underrepresented students into consideration, starting with the mission statement to curriculum changes. Due to the increase in underrepresented students on college campuses, including first generation students and minority students, her focus has been to show that improvement and development in colleges is crucial for student success (Hurtado & Ponjuan, 2005). Student success needs to have a shift since the demographic makeup of college students has shifted. Development from within the college is important. Faculty members’ and professors’ exposure to diversity is a necessity for the development of college campuses as well.…
As a society, as the Harvard business professor pointed out, we tend to beat around the bush when it comes to race. However, this is not something we are born knowing. Children at young ages do not have this issue playing the game, but by nine or ten, they had stopped distinguishing the races. This is not because they can no longer see or identify the differences but it is because they learned the culture norm of America about avoiding the topic of race. By doing so, the country as a whole has mitigated its communication in not only the day-to-day situations, but also in things as serious as our government.…
What are the primary ways of determining institutional racism and what are the strengths and pitfalls of each in working toward a Criminal Justice system that is culturally sensitive? Institutional racism is defined by the text (McNamara, Burns) as the type discrimination built into the structure of society (McNamara & Burns, 2009, p. 329). However in the article Crack Pipes and Policing: A case Study of Institutional Racism and Remedial Action in Cleveland it was described as “one of the earliest conceptualizations of “institutional racism” was articulated by Stokely Carmichael and Charles Hamilton (1967), when they delineated its features and consequences in their book Black Power: The Politics of Liberation.…

During the 1960's, students at Berkeley were concerned with a number of issues, such as civil rights, the war in Vietnam, women rights, and freedom of speech. Once scene in the film that describes the students movements to protest discrimination against African-Americans in 1963. The students faced the most difficulty when they tried to help African-Americans and other minorities secure jobs in the Sharanton hotels in San Francisco. After a number of students were arrested for their sit in protest in the Sharranton hotel incident, an agreement was reached between the entire hotel industry and the The Ad Hoc Committee To End Racial Discrimination to hire minorities for all positions including management. The Sharanton incident uplifted the students…
Racial tensions at the University of Missouri (Mizzou) have recently consumed media headlines. “Some black students say they are greeted with piercing stares when they walk by white-dominated fraternity and sorority houses” (Eligon, 2015). It all started when student Briana Gray returned to her dorm room and a picture of a black woman being lynched had been hung up on the door. Her roommate replied that her friends put it up as a joke. Ms. Gray ended up attacking the girl and her friends, and police broke up the fight.…
College sports have become a universal pastime for many Americans. Popularity of college sports has peaked with the 2014 inaugural college football playoffs, becoming “[t]he two most-watched broadcasts in cable TV history,” with a combined total of 56.5 million viewers between the two semifinal games according to CNN (Pallotta). Young men playing college sports are exciting as it brings back the college atmosphere that many older individuals crave. However, some question if African-American players in football and basketball are being exploited by the greedy NCAA supporting racial discrimination and cashing in on these innocent, unpaid students? Donald H. Yee attempts to answer this question by displaying a world of athletes, mostly represented…
Campus climate has a large effect on a student’s marker for success (Harper & Hurtado, 2007; Terenzini et al, 1994; Hurtado, 1994; Hurtado & Carter, 1996; Locks, Hurtado, Bowman, & Oseguera, 2008). Minority students can feel many different factors on a campus. Minority students have remarked that the only reason to stay at a certain university was in order to change its climate (Harper & Hurtado, 2007). If the campus is not welcoming or does not have specific programs or departments to deal with minority students, it can hinder retention. Minority students are more likely to leave school because of the transition adjustments than their white counterparts (Terenzini et al., 1994; Ortiz, 2004).…
Equality and Fraternity form the backbone of the Judiciary of any form of Government; ‘Innocent until proven guilty’ (Lombardo,p.5,2015) . However, Racial Profiling put into play with the law, reverses the notion by creating a sense of guilt based on their physical characteristics and then makes them prove their innocence (Lombardo,p.5,2015). In 2009, a study conducted at West Virginia showed that African-American and Hispanic motorists were stopped collectively 3.12 times than White drivers and were more likely to be arrested, yet there has been a higher contraband hit rate for White drivers than minorities. (The Leadership Conferrence,p.10,2009). This in itself shows how equality is being violated on the grounds of profiling and thus need…
Krystal Smith Professor Ellis African American History 5 September 2014 Racism is Not a Permanent Feature of American Society Slavery has been said to be a “stain on the history of the United States of America.” Some believe that racism is a battle that African Americans still struggle with today; and always will. Other, on the other hand, believes that factors than racial discrimination explain the currently disappointing statistics of African Americans today. Derrick Bell, a professor at Harvard University school of Law and civil rights lawyer, argues that racism is far from over.…
Institutional racism is a form of racism expressed in social, political and economic systems. “Between the World and Me”, depicts the institutional racism that plagues the Black community. Such as political, educational, and criminal justice inequalities. The “black body” is forced to create their own sense of self in a world that they do not recognize as their own. The Black body is a metaphor to describe the loss of identity.…
The three key things that seem to effect the way that students map and interact with campus are on or off campus residence, transportation method, and major; it should be noted that I believe gender and race have a fairly significant impact on how interviewee’s gave meaning to and experienced campus, and while past conversations with students of various gender identities and with students of color indicate that this is true, I do not have any data to support this hypothesis due to my sample group being composed entirely of white women. These traits have a clear impact on what buildings the students use, how they move around campus, and how they view the surrounding area. These traits are not all static and have, of course, changed over the…
“No one is born hating another person because of the colour of his skin, or his background or his religion. People learn to hate from young age , and if they can learn to hate, they can be taught to love, for love comes more naturally to the human heart than its opposite” (Mandela). The act of racism and inequality within the school system can be dated back to 1896 with the Plessy V. Ferguson case, which resulted in “ separate facilities for education” and an “ equal education”(123helpme). The lack of cultural diversity and ignorance exist all around us within today's society.…
