African American Males And Its Effect On College Campuses Essay

Over the last few years, we have seen a focus on Black Lives Matter. On several occasions, we have witness were African-American males have been shot in cold blood because of the color of their skin or because they were viewed as a threat. We have seen an increase on college campuses where students of color are having to deal with microaggression from students, faculty, staff, and from those in the community where students are trying to obtain their education or to be a part of their college campus. Last month, the president of the University of Louisville had a Halloween party where female staff members dressed as Latino males, and male staff members dressed as females. This was disrespectful to the Hispanic community and others.
African-American males do not see themselves as being integral parts of campus communities, and at times will disengage in their academic study. As a part of my action project, I wanted to see what strategies, programs, or challenges that they face in regards to the retention of their students of color, and specifically their African-American males. The retention rate and graduation rates of African-American males lag behind those of other ethnicity or gender groups. One of the institution that I reached out to was the University of Kentucky because they have worked to have programs specifically on their campus for African-American males.
