In the past, pregnancy has been considered a condition for confinement, but today it is recognized as a unique time for change.1 It is becoming widely known that habits adopted during pregnancy could affect a woman’s health for the rest of her life, and that a habit worth implementing is exercise. Exercise prescription for the development and maintenance of fitness in women, either pregnant or non-pregnant, consists of activities to improve cardiorespiratory and musculoskeletal status with aerobic and resistance exercise respectively.¬¬2 Though both aerobic and resistance exercise are important, this technical brief will focus on the aerobic exercise prescription for pregnant women as well as an overview of the benefits and risks of aerobic physical activity (PA) and exercise for the mother and fetus.
The Prescription Despite the fact that pregnancy is associated with profound anatomical and physiological changes, there are few circumstances that should impede otherwise healthy, pregnant women from following the same recommendations as non-pregnant women.1,2 The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the American College of Sports Medicine recommend the accumulation of 30 minutes or more of moderate-intensity PA on most, and preferably all, days of the week.1,2,3,4…
