A referral to a university counselor would be suggested to the student to determine if she has a learning disability. This would allow her the benefits of the university in her academics, by giving her extra help, time, and consideration when grading her work and tests. As far as diversity and multicultural considerations for the student, it looks as if her stepfather is attentive to her academic career and feels that her education is very important. The most important consideration when advising this student would be the possibility of a learning disability or attention disorder. She will need to be counseled and a determination made on a disability to move forward with an accurate advising plan. Once she has been counseled and a determination has been made on a disability, policies on poor academic standing needs to be addressed with the student and what the consequences are.
