Google defines an acute stress disorder as it “is characterized by the development of severe anxiety, dissociative, and other symptoms that occurs within one month after exposure to an extreme traumatic stressor,” a death or an accident. A stress disorder can affect decisions made in the future and the outcome of consequences. Stress can be as physical as it can be mental on a person. Most people can recover or bounce back from an event that is caused by stress but for the ones that can, it becomes a mental disorder.
The background of a stress disorder starts with traumatic events that revolve in emotional responses. The emotional responses to disasters that form stress are as follows: the impact phase, crisis phase, …show more content…
It’s said that short periods of stress induced changes in brain neurons that can make a person hypersensitive--in the same way of people suffering long-term effects of traumatic stress (Cukan 1). Researchers say that stress causes shifts in gene products- the protein AChE-R, that then causes problems with the nerve impulses that affect how memory and behavior perform (Cukan 1). This protein that is produced by stress, happens to also be present in several other neurological diseases, so it’s very possible that with further research, stress could be leading to diseases. Memory problems can form from something wrong in the way a few critical neurons from or use a particular neurotransmitter (Sapolsky 1). Along with that, trouble with the enzymes that degrade a neurotransmitter, the receptor for it, and the intracellular messengers it triggers can also become a cause from stress (Sapolsky 1). Sleeping problems can occur, along with mood swings, and being distressed, all are symptoms of stress related problems that can occur …show more content…
One methods is the use of drug therapy by using anti-depressants like Prozac or Zoloft that can be prescribed and monitored to reduce anxiety (Cukan 1). The second method is to try counseling, to see if that is the correct approach for the individual in dealing with their symptoms (Cukan 1).
In the third region of the brain is where scientists attention has been drawn because it may provide a reason as to why stress happens and the certain types of serious stress that occur there (Sapolsky 1). Also, in exploring this region on the brain, scientists have learned that not all stress is bad, some forms can help people's memory (Sapolsky 1). Stressors that happen to last less than a few hours are helpful because they sharpen memory because of the adrenaline rush that comes with stress induced activities (Sapolsky 1). Students complain about how stressful school is but they don't know about the different types of stress that their are and the results from those forms. Students think about anxiety, procrastination, depression, and a lack of sleep as being stressful. Most people, when they complain about stress, aren’t talking about the life altering and damaging effects that happen from the more severe types of
