Other than dietary and genetics, there are many other initiators such as stress, cosmetics, the environment, medication and drugs. Acne is caused due to physical, mental, and environmental influences. Many debate that acne is caused by genetics or dietary, but there is no leading factor. In contrast there are many factors that contribute. 40 to 50 million americans are affected by acne, the most common skin condition in the United States. Around 85 percent of people, between the ages of 12 and 24, experience at least minor acne. Due to acne, psychological and physical problems often occur. These problems include permanent scarring, depression, anxiety, and poor self-image. Many people lean towards getting treatments for acne, the cost associated to acne exceeding $3 billion (“Acne”). Although a large amount of people are affected by acne, only 11 percent that are suffering with acne seek help. 40 percent of people affected by acne do not seek treatment. 11 percent of those people will see a physician, 20 percent will go to skin care centers, and 30 percent will use over the counter medicine. Up to 20 percent of people have facial scarring due to acne. 20 million people have acne bad enough to scar (“Useful acne stats”). Among the large numbers of people affected by acne, very few people are willing to seek help.
