In The Crucible there is a group of girls that go into to woods with intentions of speaking to the devil. The major instigator to the Salem witch trials was Abigail Williams, she accused many of witchcraft and caused many to be hung. Abigail was a maid to John and Elizabeth Proctor. In the Crucible, Abigail and John had an affair, because of this Elizabeth fired Abigail. Abigail is in love with John Proctor and wants him to leave his wife to be with her, so Abigail goes in the woods to summon spirits to kill Elizabeth Proctor. Abigail lies about about her affair and being involved with witchcraft to save her good name. Abigail Williams played a prominent role in the salem witch trials which caused people to jump to conclusions and to miss trust their own faith.
The Salem Witch Trials started in 1692 and ended in 1693, 200 were accused, and 20 were executed. This all began when a group of girls went into the wood to summon spirits so they could get revenge on the people they despised the most. In this time period, any interaction with devil is seen as unholy, in this society it was crucial that everyone keep their pure name. Some of the girls started to act in odd ways after this event. In an article Brooks says, “Shortly after the incident, in January of 1692, Betty Parris and Abigail Williams began behaving strangely, having fits, screaming out in pain and complaining that invisible spirits were pinching them” (Brooks 1).
