He remember being scared the first time he saw Jim's new woman knowing that Lutie would be hurt. If he mentioned Lutie to Jim he would immediately get struck down by his father. Bub tried to move past his conflicting emotion in fear of getting abused by his father. She was a nice lady, and she cooked well, or at least better than Jim did. However, her touch would never replace Lutie’s soft and gentle affection. Bub would lay in bed at night with the consuming darkness filling in all around wishing for Lutie to walk in and kiss him good night - just one caress would ease his pounding heart. The darkness never bothered him before Lutie left, but now it represented isolation and vulnerability. He would hear Jim yell out in frustration some nights because of the perpetual and monotonous days consisting of nothing but caring for Bub and himself. A door slammed in another room and Lutie rushed around the house gathering all of her belongings. Alerted, Bub peeked around the corner to Jim sitting silently staring at the wall with a crooked smirk smeared across his face and Lutie hustling things around. “Bub, grab your clothes. We are going to Pop’s immediately.” Lutie called out with her focus clearly not on her child. “But-” Bub barely squeaked out before Lutie interrupted him. “Now.” Bub ran to his dresser and lifted his play shirt up. He looked the garment over, taking note of at all the worn parts and stretched sections and imperfections. These all were memories of fun and games with his friends, memories of being carefree and happy. He rested the shirt back down and gently placed his index and middle finger on his cheek that had been bruised from the back of Jim’s hand. Despite the neglect his father treated him with, he still loved him. Bub’s inexperienced, unconditional love was too strong to simply let go of his father. However, he had an even stronger and more tender bond with Lutie. He turned his head and looked and her anxiously darting around the house. Bub knew that this was one of those instances that he would not understand but just have to
