“EVERYTHING!?” mama asked shocked. “Everything” replied papa, “books, newspapers, even letters.” “What about Gurda!?’’ I asked almost in tears. ”I’m sorry Elizabeth. “I was shocked and very disappointed because this meant I would not be able to send as many or maybe even no more letters to Gurda, my best friend. Her family had not come to America with mine so the only way for us to communicate was to write letters. We had even came up with our own secret way of writing so others could not read them. Papa said if we had to mail or was to need an important document we would have to get a special stamp. I looked over to mama and the wired thing was she didn’t seem sad she seemed angry. I had never seen mama like this, she was always the one to calm down papa and tell him everything was going to be okay. Papa noticed also. “But I’m sure Taylor and the other sons will figure out something.” Papa tried to reassure mama, but it didn’t seem like it was working. When Taylor came home that evening I asked him if he and the Sons of Liberty had come up with a way to let our voice be heard, but I already knew the answer. It was the same answer he had given me the last few evenings when he got home. I knew he would not be able to tell me for it was the code, and it did not that I was a girl. All we were supposed to do was cook clean and sleep and that was exactly what Taylor told me to do. That night papa called a family meeting. As much as she tried to hide is we could all tell mama was angry and uneasy but most of all scared and worried. Papa had Taylor explain to mama that everything would be okay and was already being handled, but this was not enough for mama she wanted to know what the plans were and how things were being approached. Taylor of course could not say, instead he said “Mama everything will be fine, I promise.
