The presidential race will soon be closing, and with this deadline fast approaching for the candidates, they are making any advertisement they feel they must in order to bolster support for their campaign. This includes slander campaigning, which is an advertisement that attacks the opposing candidates’ policies and credibility. When these advertisements are well produced, they are some of the most effective campaigning tools that are available to the candidate. This is because “We pay more attention to negative information. It’s more salient, it scares us, and we’re more likely to remember it” (Phillips). One such advertisement is “Dear Donald Trump” by Hillary Clinton. This is not the case regarding Clinton’s advertisement. Clinton appeals mainly to pathos in her video. The way she arranged her ideas was much different format than a typical slander advertisement. It is written as an open letter to Donald Trump using Clinton’s supporters as a vessel for her message. The people explain how Trump, his values, and his ideas do not represent the American way of thinking (Clinton 0:06–0:12). There were people of all races, religions, genders, and sexualities, as well as children, celebrities, disabled people, and supporters of other candidates featured in the video. This displays the author’s understandings of hot button topics and issues in America. She chose to incorporate these things because she knows that the American people would react well to multiple demographics disagreeing with Trump’s ideologies instead of an ordinary slander campaign against Trump. Also, the argument is always progressing in a logical and sensible way. This was an interesting way to tackle the concept of slander advertisements and one that has been very rarely popularized to this
