Argumentative Essay - Artifice “The most essential skill in political theater and a consumer culture is artifice. Political leaders, who use the tools of mass propaganda to create a sense of faux intimacy with citizens, no longer need to be competent, sincere, or honest,” Chris Hedges states, in “Empire of Illusion.” Based on that, the author is trying to convince his readers that publically, when people advertise for themselves or other things, false information could be thrown out there. This is a problem because when people are advertising, the audience would like to know all about what’s being advertised. However, not everything that is shown is true. This is important because some people only put out what others would want to see, and …show more content…
Hedges states, “Most of all, they need a story, a personal narrative.” Some people may make up parts of their background, just to look impressive to others. I do believe that people who put themselves out there, don’t show the negative qualities about themselves. They only show people the good things, to make them look good. That is why they would need some background, to show proof of where they came from, what their intentions are, and how they’re like as a person, so that people can know more about them. Also, it’s based on how people present themselves. When people advertise, they may leave out some true information, to get the audience’s attention. However, instead, advertisers should put out true information, but make it entertaining at the same time, to get the audience hooked. Do you want to be part of something that is full of lies but is entertaining, or be a part of something that is true, but slightly less entertaining? This matters because some people are really ignorant and choose to not care for the truth. They just take it the easy way around. Lies being spread out should be stopped. People should start spreading the truth about themselves, even if it would attract less people. A solution to that would be to just make the truth more

Be truthful to yourself – People, when consumed by their desire to feel happiness, resort to rationalization, denial or repression when in stressful situations. When you practice rationalization, you try to justify situations according to conditions that are favorable to you. By doing this, you are filtering parts of the truth and only acknowledge those that will make you feel good about yourself. That distorts the truth and it will give you a skewed version of reality – one that is selfish. When you are in denial, you refuse to accept the truth and convince yourself that it is actually a lie.…

Telling children there is a Santa Claus or other mythical creature is also lying but for the sake of a child’s heart, it is also fun and bringing the imagination out in them. There are multiple ways we lie, and Ericsson was bringing this to light. We put such a bad stereotype to it, and we know when there is a time to tell a lie for good or evil. Telling a lie just depends on how we want the result to be. Ericsson, of course, did not condone this but knew that by giving these examples more people would come to terms with seeing the good and evil of it.…

Since it seems natural to want those who agree to continue agreeing, there may be merit to continuing the pitch, if only on a reduced level. However, the axiom suggests this is a waste of persuasion and could do more harm than good as the audience becomes annoyed.
