Negative advertising within political campaigns is found throughout the world and many leaders have extensively utilized it to their advantage. But is it moral, or even the right thing to do?
Negative campaigns are embedded within the history of the United States and, many other countries as well.“Daisy”, a famous advertisement from the 1964 campaign was played just once by the Democratic party. It was in favor of President Lyndon Johnson and presented a tragic yet extremely powerful image of a young girl counting down the petals of a flower.As she counted, an omnipotent voice took over as the girl slowly faded away until suddenly an atomic bomb appeared, annihilating a mass of land. There are many examples of negative advertising taking place in the current election itself. Did you know that, Hillary Clinton was present at Donald Trump’s wedding. Trump had even praised her as an excellent Secretary of State, but once they were running against each other, they became bitter rivals. Donald Trump was suddenly claiming Hillary Clinton as the absolute worst Secretary of State to date! Yet, this has become a practiced tradition, even Thomas Jefferson’s presidency was claimed to consist of murder, robbery, rape, adultery and even incest by John Adam supporters.
Negative advertisements spurn many controversial questions to the public eye, but many of them are irrelevant. I mean honestly do you really think Marie Antoinette said, “Let them eat cake”. Of course not, the pamphleteers had created false rumors.
