A review on “ A History of the World in 6 Glasses”
History can be observed through many different events and times. Some people dictate history by the wars fought, some by the art of that era, but the book “The History of the World in 6 Glasses” does it by drinks. Those 6 drinks would of course be, Beer, Wine, Spirits, Coffee, Tea, and Cola. Throughout History, these drinks have been prominent and each have had incredible significant value in their respective periods. Some were used as currency, while others as a status symbol. However, due to the class being based on the second half of History, we will only be going over the second half of the drinks: Coffee, Tea, and Cola. We will dive deep into the history of these drinks, find out why they were so popular and uncover their mysteries. The first glass we’re talking about, and the 4th in the book is Coffee. Not many people are sure how it was created or found, but historians believe it was discovered in the 9th century. With that being said, Coffee did not appear in writing until 1671. Coffee was incredibly popular with its users. This was first because Coffee was safe to drink. Most sources of water were usually contaminated and plagued with disease, but much like beer, coffee had to be boiled in order for it to serve it. When the water is boiled all the bacteria is killed. It was also non alcoholic and anyone could drink it. It was a much more social drink and offered people who do not drink alcohol, a classy…
