Although there are several methods to conduct research studies, there is one in particular that interests me most. This method of research is called the exploratory research study. This type of research is typically conducted for a problem that has not yet been clearly defined or resolved. Exploratory research is not usually generalized to a population of people, but to a select few or small group that is affected by the issue at hand.
One study that has not only captivated my attention because of the rising number of people that are affected, but has also been an on-going battle in my personal life is Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and Substance Abuse (PTSD). PTSD/SUD is when a person learns to cope with traumatic life experiences through the overuse, and more commonly abuse of drugs, alcohol, or nicotine. More than likely the person suffering with PTSD/SUD will eventually use substances as their only form of coping to deal with their past experiences that left a traumatizing impact. According to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs “Some people try to cope with their Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) symptoms by drinking heavily, using drugs, or smoking too much. People with PTSD have more problems with drugs and alcohol both before and after getting PTSD. Also, even if someone does not have a problem with alcohol before a traumatic event, getting PTSD increases the risk that he or she will develop a drinking or drug problem.”
