Alzheimer's is a particular sickness under the wide category of dementia. Dementia is a neurological state described by weakness in the typical working of the mind. This may well incorporate debilitation in dialect, discernment, memory, psychological and identity abilities. Normally the veering off side effects presents as a disorder which brings about impedance with the social, spiritual and mental working of a person. The situation has a practical and recorded late onset with expanded predominance among the elderly or the maturing population.…

Dementia is a syndrome characterized by dysfunction in or loss of memory, orientation, attention, language, judgment, and reasoning. Personality changes and behavioral problems such as agitation, delusions, and hallucinations may result. “The onset of symptoms is slow and insidious, and the course of disorder is generally progressive and deteriorating” (2015). • In what stage of Alzheimer’s disease is this client? What criteria did you use to determine this?…
The first story that I listened to was “I’ve essentially lost my mother, although she’s still living.” It is about a woman named Teresa, who speaks about her mother battling Alzheimer’s and how awful it was to watch her mother live through the agonizing fear as her Alzheimer's progressed. She also speaks about how her mother’s side of the family has a 100% occurrence of the disease and that after being tested, it confirmed that she too would eventually develop Alzheimer's. It was compelling to hear Teresa speak about her mother in such a loving and caring way, but at the same time you could hear the slight fear in her voice as she recalled watching the disease progress over the years for her mother and her realization that she will one day experience the same thing.…
Exciting story to draw in audience and transition as to why this sparked my interest in becoming a PA. Imagine waking up one morning and looking into the mirror only to see an unrecognizable, aged face. You are in a foreign house with strangers surrounding you. They insist that this is your home, and that they are your family. You have an entire history of memories, but today you cannot remember the day or even the year.…

PLoS ONE, 8(3), e59735. doi:10.1371/journal.pone.0059735 The neurological changes related to Alzheimer's disease (AD) heavily support the amyloid cascade hypothesis. Bapineuzumab is a monoclonal antibody that targets the N-terminal region of amyloid-B (Aβ) peptides.…
The Mask of Alzheimer’s My grandfather was like a masked man. I have no idea when he took off his disguise, but it was most certainly not around me. His façade toward me kept me from truly knowing him. He was a quiet, reserved man who I always nodded my head to, even when I didn’t understand what he was saying.…
Alzheimer’s disease (AD), was discovered as senile form of dementia in early 1907 by Alois Alzheimer in 1907. Since then the disease has been researched and studied to generate a knowledge base of symptoms, etiology, pathogenesis, treatment and management of the disease. AD is differentiated from senile dementia due to the neurodegenerative process which involves deposits of protein known as amyloid in neurons and neurofibrillary tangles which form plaques. This formation of plaques leads to neuron death and the hardening of tissue leads to progressive and terminal neurological disease state. There has been no cure to Alzheimer’s disease to the complexity of disease and the lack of understanding of amyloid protein and its process.…
Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is one of the most common causes of severe cognitive impairment among the elderly (Ott et al. 1995). AD is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder, primarily characterized by neuronal loss, formation of intraneuronal neurofibrillary tangles (NFTs) and accumulation of β-amyloid peptides (Aβ), as plaques in brain parenchyma or as cerebral amyloid angiopathy (CAA) in blood vessels (Reitz and Mayeux 2014). Additionally, structural brain abnormalities, blood-brain-barrier (BBB) dysfunction, brain atrophy, and neuroinflammation have been associated with AD pathology, correlated with a gradual decline in cognition (Querfurth and LaFerla 2010). To date, the exact mechanisms underlying AD pathogenesis remain unclear, as are…
For a majority of my life, I have always thought to myself that my parents had an easy life that revolved around their work, resolving small family issues, and paying their bills on time. This was essentially their lifestyle I perceived at the time; however, I could not have been any wrong than I have originally knew. As I started to mature overtime, becoming conscious of the types of struggles that my parents were going through with having to deal with language barriers, not being able to have proper conversation with those who spoke English. Nor were they able to provide enough money to their own parents, seeing that my cousins had to rely on a portion of my mother’s income, helping to pay of the medical supplies for her father. At the time,…
Her mind was gone and so were we in her mind. She would call out for her brothers and sisters and her “mama” all the time. When caretakers wouldn’t show up my grandmother and mom took turns staying with her until the agency would send another caretaker. At times I didn’t want to visit her because it made me so sad to see her that way but my mom insisted that we spend time together before it was too late, which I am grateful…

With that experience I got to understand what it was like to care for someone with Alzheimer’s at such an early age and also what emotions come to the family once they know what their loved one is going to go through. It is hard! It is hard on everyone to understand and cope with the diagnosis, but in the end the person needs to be kept happy and the family needs to love them as they did…
