Alzheimer And Dementi The Struggle That Changed My Life

For a majority of my life, I have always thought to myself that my parents had an easy life that revolved around their work, resolving small family issues, and paying their bills on time. This was essentially their lifestyle I perceived at the time; however, I could not have been any wrong than I have originally knew. As I started to mature overtime, becoming conscious of the types of struggles that my parents were going through with having to deal with language barriers, not being able to have proper conversation with those who spoke English. Nor were they able to provide enough money to their own parents, seeing that my cousins had to rely on a portion of my mother’s income, helping to pay of the medical supplies for her father. To make the situation worst, I was ignorant at the time and asking her to purchase me the latest consoles so that I may impress my friends. As of now, I am no longer the selfish kid I used to be, instead I provide a small portion of my income to her father, allowing him to reduce some of the side effects of Alzheimer’s Disease and Dementia. And the funny part is, this is only the tip of the iceberg, because my mother sacrificed her entire life at Mexico so that my older brother and I could have a better future in the United States. Even though she had her master’s degree in biotechnology (not easy to obtain), allowing her to become a nurse, and help those that require medical assistance. Now, she works as a house cleaner, only to provide enough money to feed our family, pay her taxes, and her father’s medical bills. Yet, this does not stop her from enjoying her daily life, she still enjoys cooking for us by replicating dishes that were taught by her mother and aunt, recipes which were passed on generation to …show more content…
Like I mentioned before, my mother wanted to ensure my older brother and I would have a good life, not having to deal with the economic issues that were uprising at Mexico at the time. She wanted us to focus on our careers, so we could financially support our own families in the future, and to spend quality time with our children. Even despite knowing the risks that she could potentially be arrested and deported back to Mexico, she did not care, considering she knew that there was new hope at America for my entire family. At the time, she felt so rushed that she did not have time to say proper goodbyes to her family members, since she was going to rely on people to smuggle her inside the United States, by riding in the back of a pick-up truck. Though, after crossing the border, they took more than they originally ask for, making it more difficult to support herself, considering she was hoping to sell some of her stuff, allowing her to obtain have some meals. Also, to clarify, my older brother and I were not born at the time, but she was pregnant at the time, carrying my older brother. She would spend days, weeks, and months to struggle to find a decent job, which would pay under the table, allowing her to rent out an apartment that we still currently live today. Yes, this apartment that she still pays monthly is the same apartment I

My mother, Maria, was born and raised in San Salvador. San Salvador is the capital city of El Salvador, is the smallest country in Central America, and for her childhood and teenage years, the country was in a civil war. This civil war started in 1980 and lasted 12 years. In the summer of 1990, Maria decided to visit her eldest sister, Fatima, for the winter holidays. Fatima and her first daughter, Karla, had first immigrated illegally to Houston, Texas in 1983 with the help of Mexican Coyotes – “people smugglers” who helped with the migration of people across the Mexico–United States border, and then finally to Vancouver, Canada in 1985 where she gained refugee status for herself and her family.…

Though I knew most of what she told me it was still nice to just sit and talk about her life experiences. My mother was born to older parents and was the youngest of three children.…

Interestingly, this process has been around since the beginning of man and is an essential part of being human. When I was a child, my family would have been considered a traditional family – my father worked, my mother stayed home with my older brother and me, we lived in a house and could pay our bills. The social hierarchy of my family was very complex – my mother usually had a say in everything and during the day I thought of her as the head of the household. However, when my father came home he was the head of the household. Around my 13th birthday, though, my family hierarch changed because my parents got divorced.…

My families’ migration story dates back to three generations. My great-grandfather came to the United States for the first time through the Bracero Program; a program that “brought millions of Mexican guest workers to the United States [which] grew out of a series of bilateral agreements between Mexico and the United States short-term, from 1942 to 1964.” Unfortunately, my great-grandfather passed away a while back when I was very young, therefore, for this assignment, I decided to acknowledge my parents’ migration story, a story that relies on a series of events that tore our family apart but simultaneously brought us closer together. I interviewed my mother and my father regarding, their own individual migration stories while also focusing…
