Exciting story to draw in audience and transition as to why this sparked my interest in becoming a PA. Imagine waking up one morning and looking into the mirror only to see an unrecognizable, aged face. You are in a foreign house with strangers surrounding you. They insist that this is your home, and that they are your family. You have an entire history of memories, but today you cannot remember the day or even the year. This is how my great-grandmother described her journey with Alzheimer 's during a fleeting period of lucidness. The World Health Organization estimates that by 2050, there will be over 16 million people with Alzheimer’s disease – a disease that could possibly be prevented by a healthy diet and regular exercise.

As a first generation college student, I navigated the college system on my own, both financially and academically. I did so by trying to balance multiple part-time jobs with a heavy academic load and a healthy social life. One of my major setbacks came nine days before my winter finals sophomore year when my four roommates and I lost our house and our belongings in a fire. It was the middle of a very snowy December in Minnesota, and between help from the Red Cross, beloved friends, and many evenings spent in the back of my Toyota I managed to finish the semester. I picked up a second job in order to replace the items I had lost, and the extra work time caused my grades to dip in the spring. After moving to the Northwest, I began wondering how I could improve my grades and get myself more prepared for the academic rigor of PA school. I enrolled in a medical assistant program to further my clinical education. It was here that I realized just how much I enjoy learning about the anatomy and physiology of the body. I devoured the material which led me to mentor many of my struggling classmates. I also started taking additional science classes to further my education. I 've worked very hard on focusing on learning material rather than studying for a test, and as my most recent grades have shown, I am confident that I have developed the work ethic and mind-set that is necessary to be

I started attending Lone star college right after high school, at first, I began with the typical high school graduate state of mind, which was that college was going to be a breeze and that it would all be fun and games; more worried about what was going on in my social life rather than studying the books. Especially since I had no real responsibilities to handle or much life experience. Around my first year of college, I started dating this girl and not long after we conceived our first son. Once this happened, my focus slowly shifted from school to working a full-time job at a welding shop in order to provide for my family. I still tried to attend class but was unable to find the balance between work, school and family and this reflected my grades.…

Unlike many of my peers, my life story is slightly different. Many of my peers share the story of living in a single parent home, being homeless, violence, and poverty. For me, living in a two parent household means more work because of my desire to receive a full scholarship. Upon my research, I noticed that many of my older peers would receive better college financial opportunities because of their life experiences.…

This experience was an attempt to understand dementia after discovering a late uncle had the condition and was kept secret due to fear of the stigma. Early exposure as a companion highlighted the unpleasant side of long term care. Unpredictable movements and vocalizations frightened and pushed me from my comfort zone, however working with teams of dietitians, nurses, musicians, and artists provided invaluable practical experience and a chance to learn appropriate care for those in vulnerable positions. In particular, this experience aided me in developing lesson and unit plans for high school students as part of an interdisciplinary team while strengthening my own contributions. Working along peers in English, Math, Art, and the Humanities…
