I was born in Mexico 22 years ago and brought to the United States at the age of 10. Even though, I lived in Mexico for almost half of my life, sadly, I do not feel connected to my country as I’d hope. This is the reason that I like to be involved with my community. I understand the struggles faced by immigrants in this country and it motivates me to create dialogue and opportunities for others. At work, I often help with translations, it is something that pleases me because it allows to help others communicate and have their ideas taken into consideration. Working in an Engineering Department creates opportunities for me to be involved in a variety of projects that often require the input of the employees that work closely with our product and given their language barrier, I find the opportunity to translate the ideas and knowledge of others to our team of experts. I take this very seriously because I think it is my responsibility to be able to communicate exactly what others are attempting to express, and in that way, their ideas can be understood and

I have had a lifelong passion for environmental issues that arose from a childhood spent amongst mountains, canyons, islands, and rivers. The Anacostia River near my home is dubbed “The Forgotten River,” for it has been transformed by neglect. It was integral to my childhood—my family canoed on the river, my crew team practiced on it, and my Eagle Scout project involved rehabilitating one of its wetlands. The river showed me that environmental issues are complex, involving science, social justice, politics, economics, and history. From a young age, I was stunned by my city’s apathy and saw a change that needed to occur.…

Career Application Interpreting is a complex profession, made even more complex with cross-cultural communication. According to Schaefer, non-Mexican Americans viewed Mexican Americans as second class citizens; therefore they were expected to conform to the mainstream culture (2015, p. 227). They have also faced many barriers and lack of access to employment (Valenciana, 2006, para. 6). These are important aspects to keep in mind while interpreting for Mexican Americans. As interpreters, it is important to take all cultures into consideration, as they will undoubtedly affect our work.…

I am writing to express my sincere gratitude for granting me the opportunity to continue with my studies through your Freddie Mac/HSF Scholarship. It is an honor and a blessing to be a recipient of this year’s scholarship. Words cannot express my sincere gratitude. This past year has been a constant struggle for me and my mother; in fact, we were almost considering on returning to our home country because we could no longer afford school and housing, but your generosity has now relieved us from such stress.…

Coming from Huitzo, a small town in Oaxaca Mexico, my family has traveled far to be where it is today. We have all experienced new things, but as the oldest sibling, I have the honor of being the first person to go to college. The summers in my latter years of high school and my first year in college were spent working in the fields alongside my father. I learned to value all the opportunities I am given and learned of the importance of giving back. When I arrived in college, I knew I wanted to do the best I could and give back to my community.…

I am not prideful in regards to being an escapist. I do take ownership and accept responsibility for how this has played out for me. The definition of an escapist states, “a person who seeks distraction and relief from unpleasant realities, especially in the form of alternative mind concepts.” My mind often forms made up scenarios of how much better things would be “if only”. Currently I am in the stages of realizing how unhealthy assessing those daily comparisons can turn out to be.…

Growing up I've always received pressure from family to go to UCLA, but I did not want to live my life by the direction of others. I stuck to what I believed in and decided that UCSD was the perfect school for me due to their balance in education and extracurriculars; The UCSD students that I have met tend to have the same “drive” that I believe is characteristic of myself. Although my 3.94 GPA may seem relatively low, I believe my constant improvement every semester is more valuable. I went from holding a 3.67 GPA, with inefficient studying habits, to now holding a 4.3 GPA, taking the most challenging classes available to me.…

My college career began at Seattle Central College when I was senior in high school because I was in the Running Start program. I had a good work ethic throughout the first few years of high school and wanted to challenge myself during senior year. I diligently attended class and took thorough notes but I did not put in any effort into the class works or group discussions which resulted in my poor performance during the first year of college. At that same time, I was going through a break up and was depressed for a few months, and that created a negative impact in the social, mental and physical aspects of my teenage life. I had failed my first English class because I only attended class and made no effort to completing the required readings…
