“There isn’t a reason for being overweight, if I can get off my ass and lose the weight so can they.” By saying this and fighting with a counselor it shows how incapable she is in understanding everyone’s unique case. A strong idea that Hopkins doesn’t seem to understand is the mental trauma overweight men and women suffer from. Dysthymia or chronic depression is well-known in the overweight community because it can cause over eating (WebMD). In several episodes of TLC’s “My 600 Pound Life,” typically follows a person who struggles with their weight and shows signs of chronic depression and overeating. Millions of obese and overweight cases in the United States are a result of Chronic Depression, for less than half of those Americans it starts before the weight gain and is hard to cure (WebMD). Knowing a couple of friends and family members who suffer from chronic depression at first they don’t believe there is an underlying problem and blames people for their problems. This prevents them from getting better and unfortunately leads them to gain more weight or waste money on weight loss
