Background
Leading up to the Holocaust Jewish people had lived in Europe for about 2000 years, however they had originally lived in Palestine, but the Romans drove them out of there in ancient times. The Jews settled in different places across the world, mostly Europe, and they actually lived peacefully alongside their non-Jewish neighbors. During the late 1920’s to the early 1930’s, Germany was experiencing great economic and social hardship because they had been defeated in World War I, and had been forced to pay huge amends to the Allies, which were the countries going against the Central Powers (Germany, Austria-Hungary, the Ottoman Empire, and Bulgaria). As a result, Germany suffered from horrible inflation and huge unemployment. Adolf Hitler, who was the chancellor of Germany at that time, blamed the Jews for the hardship his country was facing (The British Library). After its defeat in World War I, Germany was humiliated by the Versailles Treaty, which reduced its territory they had before the war, reduced its army, demanded guilt for the war, and made Germany pay a lot of money. Because of this, the German Empire was destroyed, and a new government called the Weimar Republic was formed, but it did not have enough money. On January 30, 1933, Adolf Hitler, leader of the National Socialist German Workers (Nazi) Party, was named the chancellor of Germany by President Paul von Hindenburg.
