An Underestimated Industry Under normal circumstances, if you ask someone on the street about drug trends in the United States they would certainly claim that it is on the rise, specifically with the younger generation. If you asked the same people if they knew someone that abused drugs they would undoubtedly respond yes. What about someone suffering from substance dependence? Again, the average American definitely knows at least one, and possibly many more. Does this give a realistic picture of the size of drug use in the US? The answer is: no, not at all. In fact, the problem is much bigger. Let’s say the average person only knows one hundred people intimately enough to know if they use drugs, then statistically, that is only a meager one percent of all people that abuse drugs. That’s an unrealistic number; consider instead nearly ten times that amount. In the most recent source of information on substance use, abuse, and dependence among Americans comes from the National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH). The survey found that “in 2012, an estimated 23.9 million Americans aged 12 or older—or 9.2 percent of the population—had used an illicit drug or abused a psychotherapeutic medication (such as a pain reliever, stimulant, or tranquilizer) in the past month. This is up from 8.3 percent in 2002. The increase mostly reflects a recent rise in the use of marijuana, the most commonly used illicit drug” (DrugFacts).
