In the article 5 Mistakes People Make When Meeting Someone New, by Amy Shearn (2013), she gives five how-to tips on meeting new people and indicates that the first mistake is offering to order everyone drinks from the open bar. According to research, when people do a favour for you, they subconsciously justify their actions assuming they helped you out because they like you. When asking for a favour, it makes the other person feel useful and gives a pleasant sensation. The second mistake is pretending that you do not know a lot about each other. It is a great feeling knowing others care and have common traits. Confusing dominance and confidence is another mistake stated in the article. Studies show body language can change the way you feel by altering the body chemicals. Dominance can be projected by standing up straight which increases testosterone and decreases cortisol, however, to make a good first impression, one should show trust by letting others speak first in order to make them feel understood. Individuals are often attracted to others with similar attitudes, moods and religion. The stimulus-value-role theory states people are attracted to external attributes. Validation is the primary reward and then focuses on choosing someone who is attainable. The second stage is the value state, to learn the other’s attitudes, interest and beliefs. The value stage determines whether a long-term relationship is possible. The role stage is the last step which includes how one functions and how the partner functions in the relationship compared to expectations, (White, Martin, & Bartolic, 2013
