People need to communicate to be able to express their preferences for example dietary requirements. We need to be able to communicate to warn people of special requirements such as food or medical allergies. Communication is needed to build a relationship, this is especially important to help build up a trusting relationship. People have to ask questions to find out information and build a relationship, we need to be able to communicate effectively to do this.

Asking the individual what helps and works for them, being read to isn’t something that everyone would like but some people like to have the newspaper read to them.

Verbal

The way that we speak is important when communicating verbally and how we are understood. How we put emphasis on certain words and where we leave pauses. Our accent and if we can be understood easily. When talking using the correct level of volume should be considered especially when talking to the elderly. You don’t want to sound like your shouting at people rather than talking to them, but you need to be heard. How we use language has an impact on communication especially when working with people with illnesses such as dementia. Sentences should be kept short and simple, don’t use complex sentences, words or language.

Non verbal

Using gestures when communicating is a form of non verbal communication. For example pointing or hand shaking, facial expression and nodding, eye contact or touch. The use of equipment is a way of communicating non verbally, visual aids,
