Imperialism, Nationalism, and World Power
The 19th Century was a time of nationalism, imperialism, and struggles for power. Three empires arose in this period of time, and went down in history as some of the most powerful empires, and they left a permanent mark on the world. During the late 19th Century, Great Britain, Germany and Russia all pursued overseas empires due to local economic needs and surging nationalism locally.
During the 19th century, Great Britain was the largest and most successful empire. It needed land for raw material to make money, along with the spreading of nationalism to rally their people’s beliefs. Some of the other settler colonies in the British Empire include: …show more content…
Vinkovetsky also quoted Shelikhova as to saying, “The conquering trading nations… seduce them, as people who are gullible, and breathe in the republican spirit.” “ The English… who are secretly jealous of our possessions in America.” (Vinkovetsky 126) Shelikhova made this remark during a meeting on the eve of the creation of the Russian-American Company. Shelikhova was the widow of Grigorii Shelikhov, an important merchant who was key in the establishment of the Russian-American Company. An important part of Russia was the Czar. A Czar is the Russian word for emperor/king. Many famous czars include Alexander I, Nicolas I, Alexander II, and Alexander III. However, czarist Russia would soon be deserted, for communism. Due to the Russian people’s struggling economy while under power of a czar, the people tried a system in which society was equal. Communism prevailed, and Russia decided that communism was the way to go. Very soon, communist Russia had replaced czarist Russia. This event was formally known as the Bolshevik …show more content…
All three of these empires went to battle in the historical event of World War I. Countless reasons, such as militarism, nationalism, and imperialism, set these Great Powers off. Anticipating the war, multiple Great Powers formed allegiances so that their power could grow as much as possible so that they could fight in the impending war. Germany, Italy, and Austria-Hungary all formed an alliance way before Russia, Britain, and France even thought of it. They intended to gain world power by taking it from right under their nose. As a result, Russia, Britain, and France formed their own alliance, and were ready to make a stand. (Lieven 1)
Great Britain, Russia, and Germany all fought for world power, yet one came out on top, and it was not Germany. The allegiance of Great Britain, France, and their recently acquired ally, the U.S., beat the German alliance. As a result, Germany had to pay reparations for war, leaving Germany in a economic depression. The three empires wanted world power, but in the end, world power was never achieved.
