The research article I chose studied the benefits that walking has on mental health and wellbeing. Researchers decided to implement a “100-day 10,000 step challenge” as their source of physical exercise due to the success of pedometer based programs for people in the workplace. The authors decided to this particular study to assess the impact that a step challenge has on the psychological factors of wellbeing, stress, anxiety, and depression in an international workplace setting. They carried out the study on 1,963 participants using different standardized psychological scales along with pre-and post 100-day challenge questionnaires to assess the symptoms and changes of their mental health. In today’s society, we see that mental health is most commonly treated with prescription drugs. These drugs can be costly to most mental health patients and can cause other serious side effects. What makes this research article important, is the fact that it showed improvements in mental health due to physical exercise; with more research, this could potentially decrease patients use of prescriptions drugs and instead treat their symptoms in a more holistic way. A possible error I found in the study was the amount of men and women that were chose to undergo the experiment. The final sample represented 1,458 males and 505 females ranging from 16 to 74 years in age. Although there is a wide range in the age sample, the number of males compared to females are almost tripled. Because of this, I don’t believe this is an accurate representation of all mental health patients. I believe further research linking benefits of physical activity and mental health/ wellbeing need to observed with a more equal representation of people in the workplace.
