What is Coronary Artery Disease?

Coronary artery disease is the number 1 killer in America. It occurs when the coronary arteries have a plaque build up that restricts blood flow, depriving the heart of oxygen and vital nutrients. This increases the chances of stroke and heart attack.

What is the medical term for heart attack?

The medical term for heart attack is myo-cardial infarction.

What is angina pectoris?

Angina pectoris is a condition whereby pain is experienced due to restricted blood flow to the heart. The pain can spread to the neck, shoulders, and arms.

What is athlerosclerosis?

Atherosclerosis is when plaque builds up in the arteries.

What is congestive heart failure?

Congestive heart failure is a chronic condition in which the heart doesn't pump blood as well as it should.

What are the classifications of heart disease derived by the American Heart Association. Describe the patients in each class, what their suggested MET level is, and an example of a maximum appropriate exercise for each level.

METs, which are metabolic equivalents, fall in classes 1 thru 4.

1. Class 1 - no complaints, no activity limits. Heart disease. Max MET is 6.5, as in a game of football or casual fencing.

2. Class 2 - ordinary activity leads to fatigue, etc. Max MET is 4.5, like playing ping pong.

3. Class 3 - ordinary activity leads to fatigue, etc. Max MET 3, like washing the floor

4. Class 4 - can't carry out physical activity without discomfort. Symptoms of cardiac insufficiency at rest. Max MET is 1.5, like writing.

What is a MET?

A MET is short for metabolic equivalent. 1 MET equals the amount of energy you spend sitting quietly.

What MET ratings would you give for light intensity activity, moderate intensity activity, and vigorous intensity activity. Also, give a few examples of activities in each category.

1. light intensity activity warrants a MET score under 3, and includes slow walking, fishing, and sitting at a computer.

2. moderate intensity activity has earned a grand score from 3 to 6, and includes brisk walking, mowing the lawn, and doubles tennis.

3. vigorous intensity activity trumps with a MET over 6, and includes walking on an outdoor hike, jogging, and soccor.

What is Peripheral Vascular Disease?

Peripheral Vascular Disease occurs when you don't get enough blood to your extremities, usually your legs. This causes symptoms, mos notably and aggregiously leg pain when walking.

What is TB?

TB is tuberculosis is a bacterial infection that usually affects mainly the lungs, although it can affect any organ in the body. Symptoms include cough and chest pain when in the lungs. Treatment can be drugs taken for 6 months to a year.

What is C.O.P.D.?

C.O.P.D. is Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, which refers to a group of lung diseases that block airflow and make breathing difficult.

Two of the most common conditions that make up COPD are Emphysema and chronic bronchitis.

What is Cystic Fibrosis?

Cystic Fibrosis, or CF, is an inherited disease affecting children. It affects the glands that excrete mucus and sweat. An excess of these substances causes a myriad of problems throughout the body, including severe lung infection, clogged pancreas tubes blocking the pancreatic juices from properly digesting food, and much more.

What is Respiratory Distress Syndrome?

Respiratory Distress Syndrome, or RDS, is a condition primarily affected PREMATURE babies. The inner coating of the lung is affected and the lungs collapse after each breath.

What is Bronchopulmonary Dysplasia?

Bronchopulmonary Dysplasia, or BPD, is a condition of premature babies that have progressive lung inflammation. They are born with Respiratory Distress Syndrome and if they still receive oxygen after their original due date, they are diagnosed with BPD. These are infants that must work harder than normal to obtain sufficient oxygen for survival.
