What are the 3 primary functions of an audio console?

To amplify a signal, route a signal, & mix 2 or more signals together.

Channel input selectors

Selectors between a mic or line level signal.

Assignment switches/Channel routing

Assigns channels to the left/right master output or to a submaster output.

Pan pots

Places a channels signal w/i the left-right stereo spectrum. In a mono channel a pan pot moves the signal w/i the left/right stereo spectrum. In a stereo channel the pan pot serves as a balance control between 2 channels of a stereo signal.

Channel faders

Adjust the relative amplitude of a channels signal within a mix.

Master output faders

Adjust the output of the console to a recording device, controls volume of signal leaving the board.

Final output stage of a signal w/i a console.

PFL (pre-fade listen) or solo switches

Allows for isolated monitoring of a particular signal.

Source selector

Selects a program (stereo) output, a cue output or an auxiliary output for the purpose of control room monitoring.

Control room volume

Controls the amplitude/listening level of the control room monitors.

Gain

Adds/varies amplification to a mic level signal.

Trim

Adjusts the incoming level of a line level signal.

VU meters

(Moving needle type) measure an average decibel level.

LED meters

Measures instantaneous decibel levels as well as the peak level of a signal.

Metering terms

Pegging the meter/pinning the needle, riding in the mud

What range should the signal stay in?

Operator should control the signal so it stays about between 80 and 100%.

Monitoring

The act of listening to a signal through an audio console; the signal being either program (broadcast) material or being cued or previewed for broadcast or recording purposes.

Headphones

Allow for the monitoring of a signal where a live mic is in operation

Purpose= to avoid feedback

Fade in

Slowly increase volume from silence to desired level

Fade out=opposite

Cross fade

1 sound faded down as another is faded up

Segue

Transition from 1 sound to another with no overlap or gap.
