Signal path/audio chain |
Path of a particular signal from a piece of equipment through a console &/or signal processing devices to a monitor or transmitter. |
Sound signal vs. Audio signal |
When sound is naturally produced (Ex. Talent speaking into a mic) we think of that sound (their voice) as a sound signal. When that sound signal is manipulated electronically its an audio signal. |
Direct vs. indirect/reflected sound |
Direct sound is the main sound you hear when a sound's produced (goes straight from the sound source to the mic) while indirect sound reaches the mic a little after direct sound. |
Echo |
Indirect sound has been bounced off or been reflected from 1 surface before reaching the mic. Discreet repitition of sound unlike reverb, the reflections are distinct and separate. Can be created as a combo of delay and reverb or DSP. |
Reverb |
Indirect sound has bounced off or been reflected from 2 or more surfaces before reaching the mic. Allows a sound recorded in a dead environment to sound as if it were recorded in a large room. |
Absorption |
Sound is absorbed W/I or transmitted through the material of a surface. Creates a dead studio (Sound dies quickly). Soaks up sound & shortens reverb time to prevent excessive reflection. |
Diffusion |
When sound hits an irregular surface & the sounds waves break up & disperse the reflections. |
Amplitude |
Sound waves strength or intensity; we hear it as volume or loudness. |
Decibels |
Measures the intensity of sound |
Frequency |
# of times per sec that a sound (which we hear as pitch) cycles. Measures by hertz. The faster something vibrates the higher the pitch. |
Timbre/Tone |
Relates to the waveform of the sound; characteristic that distinguishes 1 voice from another even if they're saying the same thing at the same volume & pitch. |
