    Courage, a cardinal virtue, is being able to do things even when they are very difficult. Courage is being able to do things in the face of fear. Courage is shown by many saints. The saint’s courage gave them the ability to die for their faith. Saints such as Saint Francis of Assisi, Saint Maximilian Kolbe, and Blessed Teresa of Calcutta are great examples of people who showed courage. Saint Francis of Assisi had a great trust in God. Saint Francis was born into a rich family. When francis was 20 he joined the army and fought in the war. This task obviously took courage. After the war Saint Francis of Assisi gave away all of his money and gave it to the poor, even though his father didn’t want him to. He decided to live a life of poverty. Saint Francis trusted in God to give him what he needed. Later in his life, Francis went on a mission trip and he spread the word of God. He only brought a rough tunic. At age 44, Saint Francis died. Another saint that showed courage is Saint Maximilian Kolbe. In January of 1894 Saint Maximilian Kolbe was born into a poor family that lived in Poland. In 1918 he was ordained a priest even though his father wanted him to join the army. Later in his life, Maximilian was captured and put into a concentration camp. On day, a prisoner of the camp escaped so ten men were to be killed. Saint Maximilian requested to take one man's spot and he officers accepted. A few days later Saint Maximilian died of starvation.
