a number of schemes designed to mitigate regional insufficiencies of water. Perhaps the most famous (and implemented) was proposed in 1938 by the architect of the Sydney Harbour Bridge, John Bradfield. He wanted to redirect the flow of a number of major rivers in Queensland and have them irrigate and drought-proof both Queensland and South Australia. His idea was known as the Bradford Scheme, the result of which was to permanently flood Lake Eyre. Typically a 1.5 meter flood occurs in the lake every three years, with a 4 meter flood every decade, resulting in a complete or nearly complete fill approximately four times a century. Though the scheme has been periodically trotted out as a means of meeting the water needs of a parched country, there has been enough research to show that the program has several major technical issues, prohibitive costs, and a less-than-even chance of being remotely successful. That being said, Australia does hold the distinction of producing one of the most complex integrated water and hydro-electricity generating schemes in the world. The Snowy Mountains Scheme, which significantly alters the flow of the Snowy River so that the water moves inland (diverted to the Murray River) instead of toward the ocean, involves seven power stations, sixteen dams, over ninety miles of tunnels, 50 miles of aqueducts, and a pumping station (History and Heritage of Civil Engineering). The initial scheme called for 99 percent of the water from the Snowy River to be…
