Every continent on the planet experienced the Age of Revolutions. In Africa and western Asia, new nation-states were forming. The conquered lands that made up the Ottoman Empire sought freedom of their own. The peoples of India made an attempt at freedom, but failed. It would take a nonviolent revolution almost a century later before India would succeed in becoming free.

Algeria. France ruled Algeria from 1830 to 1962. When France conquered Algeria in 1830, there was much turmoil in France itself. On top of that, the French government offered free land to anyone who would settle in Algeria. As a result, many people left France to settle in Algeria, setting off a frenzy.

While this was going on, tribal leaders in the outlying areas were very unhappy with the French occupation. They chose Abd al Qadir to lead a jihad, or holy war, against the French. A long series of battles took place, ending in 1843 with the defeat of Abd al Qadir. He escaped to Morocco where he continued the fight. He finally surrendered in 1847 after being promised safe passage to Egypt. He was sent to a French prison instead. In 1852, Louis Napoleon freed him. Abd al Qadir then moved to Damascus in Syria, where he saved nearly 12,000 Christians during a massacre started by Ottoman leaders. He died a national hero in 1883.

Bulgaria. The people that comprised what is now Bulgaria had been under Ottoman rule for several hundred years. In 1876, they rose up against their masters in an effort to be free. As word got out of the rebellion, Ottoman leaders responded by destroying about eighty villages. Many of the people were brutally killed in the process.

The manner in which the Ottoman Empire squashed the rebellion shocked the world. The foreign press was often at the scenes of destruction, which allowed the world to see just how brutally the Ottomans treated innocent human beings. Although the leaders of the rebellion did not expect to win, they did hope that the rest of the world would recognize their plight and eventually come to their aid diplomatically. In 1878, two years after the rebellion was put down, Bulgaria was granted its independence.
