28 Cards in this Set

  • Front
  • Back
Cornea
Bends incoming light and focuses it
Sclera
Covers and protects the eyeball
Choroid
Nourishes retina and absorbs light not absorbed by retinal photoreceptors
Ciliary body
Adjusts curvature of the lens
Suspensory ligament
Series of fibers that connect the ciliary body of the eye with the lens, holding it in place
Lens
Focuses incoming light on the retina at the back of the eye and regulates it
Iris
Adjusts amount of incoming light
Pupil
Opening in the middle of the iris through which light passes to the back of the eye
Retina
Absorbs light and converts it into impulses
Fovea centralis
Responsible for the highest visual activity (consists of densely packed cone cells)
Optic disk
Where the axons of the optic nerve exit the eye → No photoreceptors → “Blind spot”
Optic nerve
Transmit nerve impulses from the retina to the brain
Vitreous chamber
Space in the eyeball between the lens and the retina that is occupied by the vitreous body
Aqueous humor
Nourishes and cushions the cornea and lens
Vitreous humor
Transmits light to the retina
Superior rectus
(1) Elevates eye and turns it medially
Lateral rectus
(2) Moves eye laterally
Inferior oblique
(3) Elevates eye/ turns it laterally
Inferior rectus
(4) Depresses and adducts the eye
Medial rectus
(5) Moves eye medially
Superior oblique
(6) Depresses eye and turns it laterally
Conjunctiva
Thin membrane that covers the inner surface of the eyelid and the white part of the eyeball (the sclera)
Conjunctivitis
Inflammation of the conjunctiva; Causes white part of the eye to be red
Cataract
Clouding of the lens of the eye (due to the break-down of proteins in the lens)
Lacrimal gland
Continually secretes tears that moisten, lubricate, and protect the surface of the eye
Structures of the Eye
6 extrinsic eye muscles
Locate the lacrimal gland
