Why was the discovery of America one of the "most important events recorded in the history of mankind" according to Adam Smith

New crops were discovered by the Europeans, such as sweet potato and corn, that reshaped European diets and solved hunger issues. Native Americans suffered serious and devastating diseases because of their weak immunity to European viruses. 10 million people immigrated to the new world. African slave trade was able to take place and slavery began to develop

What are the main factors fueling the European age of expansion?

Need for resources and trade, spread of religious freedom, spreading freedom to the native peoples. The eropean conquest of America began as an offshoot quest to find a sea route to India, China, and the island of the East Indies. This was to have access to international trade

Describe the different global economies that Europeans participated in or created during the European age of expansion.

It created a global economy that railed on the goods of its colonies, it got free labor from slaves and imported goods and crops from its colonies in the Americas. Countries became wealthier and stronger as it expanded it borders. This was called the Columbia exchange in which the cultural and biological exchanges between the new and old worlds exchange plants, animals, diseases and technology transformed European and native American ways of life.

One of the most striking features of Indian societies at the time of the encounter with Europeans was their diversity. Support this statement with several examples.

Well established and built empires such as pyramids, roads, contained cities, irrigation systems, different languages and populations within different cities, art and music, religious practices, trade, and political systems.

European values and ways of life with those of the Indians

Europeans believed in land and property being a source of power when owned. For Indians, unclaimed land remained free. Europeans also liked the accumulation of wealth and material goods. Indian women owned dwellings and tools; European women didn't. However, status mattered in both native Americans and European life.

Compare the different economic and political systems of Spain Portugal, the Netherlands, and France in the age of expansion

Spain had a colonial government headed by lawyers and bureaucrats; had an upper class that had a say in political views and laws and a lower class that were forced to be laborers.

Portugal was focused on economics, trading posts, factories, established plantations which replaced the native populations with thousands of slaves shipped from Africa.

Dutch and French focused on colonization, commercial ventures never attracted large numbers of colonists, more dependent on the Indians as trading partners and military allies, slowed the Native Americans grater freedoms than the English.
