Briefly describe how to place dets in NSW.

Right hand rail in expected direction of travel. 20m apart. If placed at signal place 1st at signal, 2nd on departure side.

When does your train need to be protected?

When relief loco is required for disabled train. Line is obstructed. Your train obstructs or may be obstructing lines. If train is delayed more than 10minutes in the section and NCO cannot confirm following traffic has stopped at a controlled signal (unless driver can confirm with driver of following train it has stopped.

If you are unable to protect your train because of lack of access what will NCO do?

Advise relief crew by CAN advisory that no protection is placed down.

How do you protect your train in NSW?

Proceed 500m past rear vehicle or next fixed signal that can display stop if closer. Place down 3 dets, return to your train.

What should (may) a train control cabin have?

Point clips, telephone, ESML handle and/or EOL key, Safeworking forms.

When does an adjacent line not need to be protected if it becomes obstructed?

NCO can assure there is no following/approaching rail traffic.


NCO has used a controlled signal at stop to prevent access to obstruction.


Driver can contact driver of approaching train and verify it has stopped.

How would you protect an obstruction on an adjacent line?

Place Track Circuit Shorting clip. 500m from obstruction place 3 dets. 2500m from obstruction place 2 dets. Each direction in Bi-Di territory.

How would you protect your own train in single line territory?

Place 3 dets 500m from rear of train. Only if NCO cannot confirm following train hasn't been given instruction not to proceed.

Why wouldn't you need to place 2 dets 2500m from the rear of your train?

The section/block is occupied by your train. Signal will have to be passed at stop by following train, in which case they will be travelling at restricted speed.

What would you carry while walking in the danger zone to place dets when protecting a line?

A red lamp/flag if a train is seen as a last resort.

Under what 3 circumstances can an absolute signal be passed at Stop?

Authority from NCO. Authority from Handsignaller working under instruction from NCO. Method of Special Working (SPA,PSW,TOA,LPA).

If NCO cannot get detection on points when giving authority to pass signal at stop what will he/she get the driver to do?

Place points in Hand/Manual and set for desired path.

If you needed to protect a train or adjacent line and there was a tunnel with 500m what would you do?

Place 3 dets at entry AND exit to tunnel. Place 2 dets 2000m from entry to tunnel if applicable.

What would you do if your headlight and whistle failed in NSW?

Travel only to nearest location for remarshal or repair. Restricted speed, 25 over crossings, track workers, stations etc. Must be prepared to stop at crossings not fitted with type F protection, proceeding only when road is clear.

What are the shunting handsignals for move away and move away at caution?

Move Away Day - Make circle with your arm.


Move Away Night - White Light waved back and forwards beside body.


Move Away Slowly Day - Make circle with your arm with other hand held above head.


Move away slowly Night - Green Light waved back and forwards beside body.

Why may you be stopped momentarily at a home (arrival) or outer home signal at crossing loops in NSW?

If opposing train is entering the loop and hasn't cleared certain circuits the system will not allow 2 trains to enter the crossing loop simultaneously. "No running crosses in NSW".

In TWA if there are 2 absolute signals within 500m of the worksite how are handsignaller set up?

Inner Handsignaller only at first signal approached by rail traffic.

What are handsignals for "move towards me"?

Day - Wave arm slowly overhead.


Night - White Light waved side to side across body.


Slowly Day - Wave arm slowly overhead with other arm held above head


Slowly Night - Green Light waved side to side across body.

What is the procedure if you find a hit axle box on your train in RVDS?

Inform Control, detach at first available oppurtunity. Maximum speed of 25kmph stopping at least every 5kms to inspect.

Can multiple signals be passed with a SPA?

Yes, only if they are listed on the SPA.

If you have an empty vehicle, how much trailling weight behind that vehicle is permissible when using dyno.

2000tonnes. If more than 2000t dyno can't be used.

What details would be on a CAN for CAN block working?

Block Working Limits. Details Of Block Posts. Locations of Warning Signs. Signals that may be passed at stop without further authorisation.

What is the maximum speed when using an emergency tow chain in NSW?

25kmph.

What do you need to have onboard the loco to enter a section in Pilot Staff Working?

Every train must have a Pilot Staff Notice (PSN) and one of the following:



Pilot Staff. Half-Staff having seen the PSWI form. Pilot Staff Ticket having seen the pilot staff or half staff & PSWI. Half Staff having seen the 2 half staffs separated.

In addition to a Staff or Staff Ticket what authority is needed to enter a Pilot Staff section?

The appropriate Signal cleared or Authority of Signaller or Signaller's representative or A Proceed Handsignal.

In RVDS what is considered an attended location?

A Location that is switched in & controlled by a qualified worker either on-site or remotely. (Albury-Junee is all considered "attended")

If a relief train needs to relieve a disabled train how will they proceed in to the section?

Driver must proceed in to the BLOCK at restricted speed. If starter can set to proceed it will be.

During Pilot Staff Working when would you get a Pilot Staff Ticket?

If there will be a following movement behind you, the pilot staff stays at location and you get a PST after sighting the Pilot Staff.

What info is listed on a Pilot Staff Notice?

Start and End Points, Location Of Staffs, Points that need to be secured, Signals you are authorised to pass at stop, level crossings that have been protected, location of worksites, warning or block signs, 'additional info'.

What is the duty of the Protection Officer?

To keep workers and the worksite safe.

What is a SPA?

A Method of special working when the normal system is unavilable.

What 5 conditions must be met when passing an unattended home at stop?

Confirm it is unattended. Confirm Section is not occupied. Confirm No Conflicting move is set. Confirm route is set. Proceed at Restricted Speed.



Note - We have no "unattended" homes in NSW, but this may still be in exam.
