How do u prep a large animal for surgery?
1. Bath
2. Clip surgical area
3. Insert IV cath
4. Was out mouth to remove residual food debris that might be pushed into trachea upon intubation
5. Aseptically prep extremity and apply sterile bandage
6. Bandage horse limbs and use padded head helmet
7. Anesthetize and place on surgery table
8. Move to surgery suite
What requirements and mechanics are used when prepping horses for surgery?
1. Requires protective padding to protect against injury during induction and recovery
2. Hoist allows animals to be positioned on a table that can be rolled into the surgery room
3. Padded surgery table helps prevent muscle ischemia.
How do you prep small animals for surgery?
1. Give bath
2. Insert IV cath
3. Clip surgical area
4. Aseptically prep surgical site
5. Move to surgery suite
How do you clip the surgical area?
1. Wear a lab coat over scrubs when clipping to protect surgical attire
2. Use #40 clipper blade (do NOT use razor) and must be done as close to surgery time as possible
3. Vacuum thoroughly when finished clipping
What kind of rinses are there and what are they used for?
1. 70% alcohol: used in combination with chlorhexidine and betadine as rinse between scrubs

2. .9% saline: used if there is skin irritation or open wounds

3. Eye irrigation solution: for optho cases
Why should you flush the prepuce of a male dog prior to major abdominal surgery?
Will help prevent hidden contamination
Where do u place a purse string and why?
Areas surrounding the anus to prevent fecal material from contaminating the surgical site
How do you do a patient scrub?
1. Scrub from the surgical site outward and never go back --> extremities start at top and work down circumferentially

2. Contact time is important. A standard is at least 3 scrubs with alcohol rinse between or until your patient is clean.
What is the primary purpose of draping the surgical patient?
Isolate the surgical site from other areas of the patient's body and non-sterile areas of the O.R. table.

The drapes serve as a barrier to endogenous and exogenous sources of contamination, in particular endogenous contamination (patient's skin flora as the source), which is identified as a major source of SSI.

It also expands the sterile field for instruments and supplies on the drapes
Explain what is important about drape materials.
1. Drapes must be free of holes, punctures and tears.
2. Draping materials should be impervious and fluid-resistant to prevent strike-through contamination
3. Lint free drapes minimize airborne contamination and spreading of particles into the surgical wound
4. Drapes should resist ignition from sources such as lasers, fiberoptics and electrosurgery within the sterile field.
What are the kinds of drape materials?
Woven cloth materials
1. Linen
2. Cotton: contain lint which is recognized as a vector for SSI and NOT waterproof

Non-woven materials
1. Rayon
2. Polyester
3. Polypropylene
Fibers bonded together with cellulose by chemicals, heat or mechanically = waterproof, lint free, disposable
