Benign growths, or Moles |
Have a regular shape, are skin-colored or brown, can be flat or raised & are symmetrical. They can occur anywhere on the body. Although they are harmless & non-cancerous, these growths may need to be removed because they are unsightly or if they are irritated by clothes. Once removed, they usually will not grow back. It is important to monitor these growths & note any changes in size, shape, color or whether the borders begin to fade (bleed) into the surrounding skin. In general, the hair from a mole should not be removed unless advised by a physician should evaluate any skin growth that changes. |

Skin Tags |
Are small, elevated growths that can easily be removed by a physician. These are often found in areas where the skin frequently rubs against itself or clothing. |

Pre-malignant growths |
Are similar in appearance to malignant growths. They can either be flat or raised & are irregular in shape & border. The borders sometimes have a notched or flowery look. The color is irregular & can be shades of black, brown, red, blue or white. The growths are often asymmetrical & more than 6 millimeters in size, (the size of a pencil eraser). |

Actinic Keratosis |
These are irregularly shaped, scaly, red-pink growths that feel rough to the touch & occur on sun-exposed areas. If left untreated, these growths may develop into malignant lesions. Therefore, it is advisable to have the lesions removed as a preventative measure. |

Malignant Growths |
Are cancerous. They must be diagnosed by a physician & treated immediately. |

Basal cell carcinomas |
Are common malignant lesions that tend to appear translucent, have irregular borders & tiny blood vessels running through them. They can occur anywhere on the body, but typically in sun-exposed areas, such as around the nose & eyes. |
