After 400 BC, what 2 groups invaded India?
The Persians - who conquered India up to the Indus River Valley - and the Greeks (Alexander the Great) - who conquered the majority of India.
What was the first native dynasty to be founded in India?
The Mauryan Empire - it was formed to unify India.
Who founded the first Indian dynasty?
Chandragupta Maurya - before him, the kings fought each other.
What fears did the first ruler have and what precautions did he take against them?
He was afraid of assassination and he had all food tasted in his presence and he never slept in the same bed two nights in a row in his great palace.
Who was Asoku Maurya? What improvements did he make to his country?
He was the grandson of Chandragupta and was known as the greatest ruler in Indian history. He converted to Buddhism (which caused him to be nicer) and he set-up hospitals for both people and animals and he ordered trees and shelters to be put along the road for shade for weary travelers.
When did Asoku die?
Around 232 BC
His empire declined after his death and the last ruler of the Mauryan Empire died 50 years later, in 183 BC.
What was the silk road? At what points did the "silk road" terminate?
It was a huge trade route (4000 miles in length) that extended from Changan, China across central Asia to Mesopotamia.
Describe the route the silk road would take from the East moving west.
It starts in Changan, China and went across the Gobi Desert. Then, it went along the southwest edge of the Himalaya's (dipping into India) and went onto Bactria and Persia. Then, it went to the Euphrates and Tigris Rivers (Mesopotamia) on to Antioch, Syria.
*There was also a side road that went onto Constantinope, Turkey.
What products were produced in China?
silk and paper were most important.

Why did the Silk Road go around the Himalaya's?
Because people couldn't climb the mountain without killing themselves - it was too high, too cold, and there was no air.
What were the Vedas?
A collection of stories and hymns that result in the Hindu's holy text. It was the earliest form of Indian literature that came from Aryan traditions and it was passed down through word of mouth until it was written in Sanskrit.
