Independent variable

What the researcher manipulates in the experiment

Dependent variable

What is measured in the experiment. This is recorded by the researcher

Cause and effect

The researcher is looking at how the IV had caused the effect on the DV. Not always possible to find out.

Three types of experiment

•Laboratory

• Field

• Natural/ Quasi

Strengths of a laboratory experiment

•High reliability as can be repeated in a controlled environment.

•Internal validity is controlled through standardised procedures. Can minimise EV.

Weaknesses of a laboratory experiments

•Low ecological validity as it's in a artificial environment so it's unknown if it'll apply to real life.

• High demand characteristics as people aren't being natural

Extraneous variable

A variable other than the IV that could be causing the change in the DV.

Who completed the bobo doll experiment

Albert Bandura

When was the bobo doll experiment completed

1961

What is the bobo doll experiment a study of?

A study of aggression

What is social learning

Learning through observation and imitation

Where did the bobo experiment take place?

Psychology lab at Stanford university

What was the independent variable in the bobo doll experiment

Whether the children were exposed to an aggressive or passive role model

What was the dependent variable

The level of aggression displayed by the child towards the bobo doll

We're there any extraneous variables present in this study

• "the children were not learning to be aggressive and were just trying to please the researcher(and parents) by doing what they thought they should."

•" boys were more aggressive due to higher testosterone"

How many conditions do experiments always have

Minimum of two

Give the five key features of a lab experiment

1. Take place in a tightly controlled, artificial environment.

2.The researcher directly manipulates the IV

3. The researcher measures the DV.

4. An attempt to minimise extraneous variables is made but is not always possible.

5. They use standard procedures, whereby each participant has the same experience.
