Parts of Speech Communication Process

Speaker - credibilty, prep of speech, manner of speaking, sensitivity to audience + occassion.


Message -intended message (verbal, organization) vs actually communicated (tone gestures, eye contact)


Channel -means by which a message is communicated (phone, in person)


Listener -message is filtered thru frame of reference


Feedback - in PS mostly non verbal, physical, culturally different


Interference- anything that impedes the communcation of message external- static, air conditioning


Internal - inner distractions thoughts


Situation- funerals ceremonies and physical location

Types of listening

Appreciative listening - music enjoyment


Empathetic listening- to provide emotional support


Comprehensive listening - listening to understand the message


Critical listening - to evaluate a message for purpose of accepting or rejecting it

Four causes of poor listening

Not concentrating - interrupting out listening by thinking about other things


Listening too hard - focusing on details instead of main points


Jumping to conclusions - putting words into peoples mouth and prematurely rejecting speakers idea


Focusing on delivery and personal appearance - judging people on the way they speak or look instead of the message

How to become a better listener

Be an Active Listener - undivided attention, developing note take skills


Resist Distraction - review mentally what the speaker has said.


Dont be diverted by appearance or delivery


Suspend Judgement


Focus your listening - listening for main points, listening for evidence, listening for techniques
