What is the Cell Cycle?

The cell cycle is where a series of stages take place which lead to the cell dividing and duplicating which, in turn, produces two daughter cells.

What are the stages of the Cell Cycle?

(Interphase)

Prophase

Metaphase

Anaphase

Telephase

What happens during interphase?

DNA is replicated and Organelles are replicated too.

The cell also grows larger.

What happens during Prophase?

the chromosomes start to become visible. The nuclear envelope of the cell disintegrates and the nucleus disappears.

What happens during Metaphase?

the chromosomes begin to line up down the equator of the cell and the spindle fibres start to form.

What happens during Anaphase?

The spindle fibres attach to the chromatids contract. The chromatids separate and are pulled to the opposite poles.

What happens during Telophase?

Chromatids reach the poles and become indistinct. The nuclear envelope reforms and the spindle fibres disintegrate. Finally, the cell divides.

How do cancer drugs work?

Cancer drugs (chemotherapy) attacks cells dividing at an abnormal speed. They do this by damaging the DNA or RNA that tells the cell how to copy itself. If the cancer cells are unable to divide they will die. Although, the faster the cancer cells divide the more likely the cells are going to be attacked by the drugs. Cancer drugs can also cause induced cell suicide.

What happens when cancer drugs are introduced?

the drugs do not take an exception and since our hair follicles grow at a fast pace the drugs attack them mistakenly and cause hair loss. Hair follicles are not the only cells affected; blood cells, the cells in the mouth, stomach and bowel are also affected and the side effect of the loss of these cells are low blood counts, mouth sores, nausea, diarrhea. On the contrary, not all these side effects will occur, certain drugs cause certain side effects.

Mitosis

-Produces two daughter cells.

-Cells are genetically indentical.

-Cells are Diploid.

-For growth and Repair.

What is the definition of Diploid?

A term applied to cells which the nucleus has two sets of chromosomes
