Cosmopolis

About enframing/ nihilism

=of the lived experience of enframing, human life is relentless with out breaks/with continuous functioning/ the markets do not CLOSE...

-Book about the future, technologies that are summoning us, the way we perceived technology, future that renders/ taking shape, takes shape in the present, as a growing pile of techno-trash (computers are never fast enough....

-Like Eric Packer live with no regards to present, powerful people who run this world, and bend, how it deals with more than this,

=DeLillo something more

-Cosmopolis about thought, about passes of thinking of culture, and how to go with combating it, how and why we should think in a manner, poses this projected trend, thinking more generally, social power, about money, learning how to read so we can break them…

-Cosmopolis is very tightly structured= doesn’t really have a story telling drive= he doesn’t write outlines for his books, not interest in trying to make his writing fit, he doesn’t know how to think without writing

DeLillo: More rigorous ways of thinking= look at the world to think clearly (started writing in order to learn how to think)

The linked between what Rand is saying (conviction/ love/ knowing the world for what she calls reason= legitimate form of thinking), and Cosmopolis

Functioned on the notion of repetition(Cosmopolis)

Rap funeral, dinner with his wife, meals repeat the action of one or before, etc.

Three unites of Greek Tragedy

1) Unity of action: in which the story should have one main action with no or very few subplots

2) Unity of place: in which the story should take place in a single physical space

3) Unity of time: in which the action takes place over a period no longer than 24 hours

*Rules Cosmopolis follows*

Force & Counter Force (themes in Cosmopolis)

Two distinct themes between both novel and film...

=Force=the danger

=Counterforce= the saving power

*to articulate the forces that threaten us, but also lay as bases*

Cosmopolis involves a tactic connecting to Heidegger ‘enframing’ that is under-study

=entering into uncharted territory even with the rest getting it wrong...

“Saving power does not take root and thrive even in that wherein the extreme danger lies

-May not look elsewhere to come up with a strategy dealing or finding a way out of the nihilist state…

=ALSO.. whatever the saving power turns out to be (no one really know what it is), may look very different or similar

Driven by this interplay of counter force=gives the novel its tension

Capitalism, relationship with technology ,meaning, and thinking*How power manifests itself in technology with the capitalist society*

The Danger

=Perfection, conviction, immorality, knowing, limitlessness, futurity, triumph, destiny

We are convinced= we are right, and technology will lead us to our future

Driven by the belief, we are driven by our destiny

Fetishism

Eric doesn’t say things that conform his conviction

- He runs the economy that drives this whole planet, he fosters the danger above, even if we are present...what does it mean to believe in the legitimacy of technology?

Systems= what they consume/ what is left to enframe= fetishism…

Everything we do under this framework is toward the realization and final goal= future trying to build, there is no END,as long as we stay the course

Eric + his conventions

P. 80= “She said, “Does it ever stop? Does it slowdown? Of course not. Why should it?” Cosmopolis

=there is perfection here, trying to find order within...how he makes money, contributes to his identity, he may never question, believes in a future, system like this is taking us into the future, these are his thoughts we are reading<<< these are his informed convictions**

-He undermines the beauty in what he is doing

-Eric knows his convictions/ knows what’s going on/ what he is doing

-Packers whole life is built on knowing everything

=reads poetry and difficult science (in English/ German) knows everything on factual accuracy (ERIC IS SMART YO)

-Must assert himself in every situation- he knows what is really happening= faithful to his own reason

P. 21- Michael Chin “It charts. You have to search a little harder” (not the first conversation that tries to stop him from what he is doing)

***“All random phenomena” / “dealing with a system that’s out of control”/ “the yen can’t go any higher…” conviction creates dramatic tension within the novel

Nihilism + Fetishism

We don’t see this as danger/ we don’t want to see this at all (theme of the course)= we disregard the danger/ disaster...

We think we know what the meaning of technology is…told by global conglomerates… because of this people never know what to talk about when we think about the meaning of technology

“The frenzy” is barely noticeable by the way we live… with coordination’s we start to see what we’re doing, even though WE DON’T

Developing new values + coordinates+ new thinking= NIHILISM within the world is really difficult and hinders our ability to think outside the box

Combination of technology + capitalism= also talked about individuals are exported to make money, acquiring years to makesense

***“Do you get the feeling that you don’t know what’s going on?” Shiner (Chief of Technology) pg. 11

Saving Power (theme)

Asymmetry, doubt, morality, not-knowing, finitude, remembrance, mourning, contingency

"Stock Ticker"

A stock ticker is a report of the price for certain securities, updated continuously throughout the trading session by the various stock exchanges. A "tick" is any change in price, whether that movement is up or down.

Eric beginning to doubt his capacity= “I’m beginning to doubt I’ll ever find it” said Eric “Doubt. What is doubt? Youdon’t believe in doubt. You’ve told me this. Computer power eliminates doubt. All doubt rises from pastexperience, but the past is disappearing” Kinski PART (Chief of theory)

Cosmopolis shows this by talking about the stock ticker (our beginning to the future)=

-Eric has doubts about convictions and capacities (been there since the beginning of the novel, even before) BECAUSE

=Eric can’t sleep because something is bothering him which I believe is associated with doubt on what he is doing (like he knowns the end is sooner, rather than later)

***“Sleep failed him more often now, not once ortwice a week, but four times, five” Cosmopolis pg. 5

WHY?

=Lost of belief in the world that something likedoubt allows for… loss of hope as well… not something to fear, even though, causes anxiety= creates conditions that produces something new/ way out NOT just suicide…

Value even hopelessly= start to think with coordinates

24/7? Nihilistic?

Singularity

The singularity is a technician myth

The singularity is a myth (instrumental to political mobilization on behalf of the powers that be)

Singularity= the dominance of our perception of time/ while destroying knowledge of the past

FORM OF POSITIVITY

More on Singularity

Singularity is a dream (the world we finally wished for will be created, and we must be patience)

Those who believe in singularity…perceiving ourselves (not as embodied beings) but rather asprograms encoded into a medium= a medium that must be discarded in order to see change within our world

Faith of Technology

Our faith of technology= we're not really doingwhat we’re doing, so not really speculating, and retold to develop the world in the way we already are…

One of them tells us that we are on the right track, and the universe will be ours

Pushing capitalism= pushing singularity

Technological determinist (he believes in the power of technology to condition our selves, that he does little justice in our own struggles…)

Time + Singularity

Time is straight and pre-determined line= to achieve our destiny/ rightful place to be

Everything will be okay= time we are told is the road to utopia, rather then work together to create a future more humane...OPPOSITE..

=if we continue to live in the world we’re living in now we could potentially reach a point where we can gain more advantages than disadvantages with singularity

RayKurzweil + Singularity

Human beings for him are really programs (patterns of information, collection of algorithms)

=We must abandon our bodies…our bodies our irreverent (nothing more than functional vehicles)

**We have exhausted these possibilities**

=We will become bodies of light, with our minds free of the vulnerabilities of our bodies

**Everything we are will survive in ways imaginable**

-Kurzweil, even if the body ends up with the future, humans will not die, new bodies will be interchangeable, disposable, able to duplicate ourselves, whatever is us

Singularity= stop aging, live indefinitely, able to overcome limitations, rational, death= tragedy, we need to accept death/ goal of life (critics have said= he doesn’t accept death)

Take on a whole new body…this is not science but power fantasy= he is brilliant man, but aside from being someone who invents cool ****, he believes in almost the most restricted use of science

There is no way he can bring his father back to life

Real Life example of Singularity

GN (Nano tech) R- be able to reprogram biology in ways that can keep us from aging… (Going to your brain and interacting with neutrons)

R- Robotic: 2029 machine will be able to match human intelligence and go beyond on that= give us superhuman knowledge (looking forward to a time where we can back up our brains)

Transhumanism (H+)

Transhumanism is about redesigning and rethinking the human condition so that people are literally no longer limited by their biology

Transhumanist advocate the almost unrestricted use of science and technology to improve humanity “for the better”, so that death and disease can be permanently overcome (overcome death with unrestricted usage of science/ tech)

For some, transhumanism is about finding ways to become post-biological: that is, disembodied or mechanic

HOWEVER transhumanist believe that no one will die (what we feel when we are in a emotional state in lives that are not our own, this is unproductive, and restricts meaning for life)

Death + Ray Kurzweil

Death to him= a disease, that will be a cure tohim in time, which is one big denial of death

THIS DISREGARDS learning how to live a meaningful life, means learning to take care of others/ gain a sense of meaning because we will die

Transhumanist believe that no one will die

REASON WHY: Father was ill, father died, and he felt frustrated, and keeping a goal to keep him alive (planned to bring back his father from death)

Possessions of death= the issue is his belief, and the investment of a new world that is populated by new bodies IS desire to make new politics, guide lines and project, where we are heading...

Technology + Singularity

All of this is about technology becoming humanity + dissolve into machines, don’t worry about being alarm what matters about you will stay alive

Acceleration of technology= the law of accelerating, exponentially increasing

Technology is a deeply embedded assumption about the nature of time and human history, where time is equated with change, change is equal to progress...

**progress is synonymous (same meaning of another word) with improvement

**improvement is not just our destiny, but destiny is the essence of human history

Technology presents a linear view of time and defines history as a set of events [that can only be accounted for as stages] in the movement toward a pre-ordained end

For example: Even the present moment is understood as inevitable, [because what is happening right now is thought to be the only possible outcome of human history] since the present is what it is because it could not be any other way #spectacle

The end is pre-determined…

“Although the Singularity has many faces, its most important implication is this: our technology will match and then vastly exceed the refinement and suppleness of what we regard as the best human traits…nothing will be lost.”

Ray Kurzweil, The Singularity is Near

Significance of Singularity

The issue is the belief, the investment, both financial and libidinal (sexual instinct/ sexual drive), in a larger social and scientific project that seeks the creation of a new world populated by new bodies

=Indeed, it is the drive that counts, the desire to remake, the source that desire takes flight from, the goals toward which it is always aiming, and the politics that guide its trajectory

Because fantasies like these tell us a lot not just about where we are headed, but also why we are going there

“[The Singularity is] a future period during which the pace of technological change will be so rapid, its impact so deep, that human life will be irreversibly transformed...(including death itself)

Ray Kurzweil, The Singularity is Near

“Ultimately, the entire universe will become saturated with our intelligence. This is the destiny of the universe.” (intelligence will dominate)- Ray Kurzweil, The Singularity is Near

Singularity + Gods

Not that we will become Gods, but our excuse NOT to care…

Computer technology is built on the poor, and lower classes within society

This becomes justifiable and transcend into time and also become Gods (the lower classes are the soldiers that will get us there)

If we believe in the singularity= only we acquire the stomachs of a process that will costs the lives of others, and we are not the ones that pay the price of our technologies

=We failed to understand that these things

Prospect + Jonathan Crary, 24/7+ Singularity

Our time is the calculated maintenance of an ongoing state of transition- JC 24/7 (there is no destiny/ even though technology is developing... still wrong to assume that singularities the only possible future)

There is a concealment of the most important techniques invented in the last 150 years: the various systems for the management and control of human beings- JC 24/7

-Artificial intelligence will free us in ways we can hardly comprehend

-Revolution in living= life is radical means life will never be the same

-Real revolution is impossible, since with singularity we will sacrifice everything…humanity, etc. to achieve our “destiny”

-Why must this be our solely purpose?

Mass Production of Commodities

The mass production of commodities shapes our desires in a manner to perpetuate a power structure...built on the mass production of commodities...<“a zone of indefinite temporal duration” known as “active nihilism”>>

This is done by ensuring the continual reproduction of a particular way of life that compels us to work for and consume mass produced commodities in order to live and not die

-We are not simply passing from one system to another

-Present of particular operation is shaping our consumption

ALSO emphasize that we are NOT [that is, from one technological ‘age’ to another]…/ the form that innovation takes within capitalism is as the continual simulation ofthe new, while existing relations of power and control remain effectively the same

-Got versions of artificial intelligence…

Cloud Atlas

***Honour the consumer***

"Honour the consumers= honour the pureblood"

-Not just a hyper capitalist society

-“Corporality”

-Placed called Nea So Copros

=Consumerism capitalist society

=Freed thinking because free to buy

***Citizens on the surface= pureblood (freedom to choice) cannot see any other alternative to how they live

***Fabricants (are not given a choice)= always controlled by others***

***Consumers must spend a certain amount in order to show one class (must do)

=spend all the money they earn, in order to survive, and keep the Corporality continuing (spend to keep economy moving)

“Consumers have to spend a fixed quota of dollars each month…Hoarding is anti-corpocraticcrime. I knew this already but did not interrupt.” David Mitchell Cloud Atlas

To some fundamental change= the soul does not belong to some along soul

Microchip identifies you as a citizen… (To operate machinery, manages the money in your bank account, indicate one’s value, track our movements, and how they manage population etc.)

One chip inserted into one’s finger= the state always know where you are…

=Pureblood have found more rational that represents experiences of the past

Cloud Atlas World

**Nature is not nature in this world anymore= genetically engineered creatures that remain**

Nea So Copros is poisoning itself to death...

...soil= polluted

...river=lifeless

...air= too loaded

...food supplies= riddled with rogue genes

...cannot buy drugs to counter the deprivations

...Melanoma and malaria (increase in the north at 40 km per year)

...Africa & Indonesia (production zone) supply ConsumerZones are now 60% uninhabitable...

...Corpocracy’s legitimacy, its wealth, is drying up…<<<Corpocracy’s only strategy: denial”>>>

=The devastation to be the only state left, but the very state of the only one that is remaining= only "healthy" state in the world, but pouring waste and destruction into this state...

Deconstruction/ Environment two themes…

Deadlands into wastelands (massive resource depletion, etc.)= Nea So Copros (have same fate like the west, but because done things differently, will take longer for the destruction of this state to happen....)

Cloud Atlas + Purebloods/ Fabricants

Purebloods= as a society, suffer from depletion (relates to our own reality) **we distance our selves from all the trouble= even the very names that Mitchell invents speak to the thinking that underpins the practices and qualities of our own lives

**COMMON THEME WE IGNORE/ DISTANCE FROM DISASTER

=Nihilism lives over pureblood citizens

-Freedom is built on global slavery

-Women largely commercialized & are depicted in ways useful for work

-Women are built exclusively to work…each one is made to fulfil a specific road, transported, and killed in secret

-Fabricants push down qualities that the government deems useless and could interrupt their work, such as, memories

-Fabricants are engineered= a form of consciousness that is incapable of thinking deeper (I.E. knowledge= must learn in order to know)

Cloud Atlas + 24/7

"Only purebloods are entitled to rests... For fabricants ‘rests’ would be an act of time of theft... Until curfew at hour zero, every minute must be devoted to the service and enrichment of Papa Song" David Mitchell, Cloud Atlas

**Age of nihilism, no-one retires**

=Millions t are working around the clock to provide commodities for the West consumers

I.E China, south/ east Asia, those who work at McDonalds, etc… work hard, and do not earn enough to live comfortably

Standing reserve of labour power…those who find themselves treated this way…YOU HAVE NO REST...

Somni= revolutionary (her story doesn’t start out that way, but not where it ends…) working until death

Time she has given to her being…only real reason she survived/ not have fate like Yoona 393…Somni is taken away from Papasongs

Somni 451: her thinking that draws me towards her= she is honest, and in the darkest places…she finds something to see no one else has been able to see

=Somni 451 sees the world in a certain way… where her perspective is not affected by enframingshe doesn’t see the mountain as a standing reservoir… she sees it as just a mountain, and this how we should look at thing

Mourning

"…The accident reveals the substance…because WHAT CROPS UP is a sort of analysis, a techno-analysis of WHAT IS BENEATH any knowledge." Paul Virilio, The Original Accident

=FOCUSING ON TECHNOLOGICAL CATASTROPHIES/ DISASTERS ..AND IF WE DON'T THINK ABOUT THEM= WHY DON'T WE? (AS THE CYCLE FOR DISASTER WILL CONTINUE...)

< cannot proceed without disaster>>

Technical Developments

Technical developments= do not proceed in some kind of smooth way, we do not move smoothly into the future, we stumble into the future

Ex:Union Carbide, India > > video

=Over 500,000 people were exposed to methyl isocyanate (MIC) gas and other chemicals. The toxic substance made its way into and around the shanty towns located near the plant. The official immediate death toll was 2,259.

“To invent the sailing ship or steamer is to invent the shipwreck. To invent the train is to invent the rail accident of derailment. To invent thefamily automobile is to produce the pile-up on the highway..."

= "the tragedy of Chernobyl occurred is the original accident of a new motor, the equivalent of the first shipwreck of the first ship.”

Paul Virilio, The OriginalAccident

-The first accident of its own kind

-Catastrophes are inevitable…

Catastrophes

About transformation, power, lost, and always with the hope of gaining more, and with holes everywhere (global track pile)= we don’t really see the world in this way…

=Because we don’t see this, we are not Benjamin angel (everything is blown perpetuity forward, and we do not see the storm...angel looks back in order to mourn what we have lost)

**Catastrophic qualities**

Where are we going? What heights are we actually reaching? Our desire to intensify the storm….

Questions that run commentary to the nihilism of our age

=IF and when we chose to…we have a destiny

“Now dare to imagine the world in the year 2100. By 2100, our destiny is to become like the gods we once worshipped and feared.

-Michio Kaku, The Physics of the Future

Disaster for thinking

Disasters occur not just when a given technology explodes in our faces....

There is also what’s called a "disaster for thinking" whereby the sudden emergence, and mass acceptance, of a particular belief, or belief system, can confuse and entangle us for centuries

For example, the teleological notion that we have a destiny, and that we must fulfill it bydeveloping modern technology in a manner both rapid and limitless, is one such disaster for thinking

-Striving to engender new way of thinking= there is no destiny…

-The most atrophic act is the how we forgotten that we think in a different way

-How are we actually advancing into what end?

**Technological development is conditioned to enframe= the new progress entails we are going somewhere… (development= enframing)

=Fight against propaganda of process (our never ending celebrating to technological given point)

The endless stream of utopian= vision of technology (understanding of progress…someone like Kurzweil)

=The singularity, as time goes on, technology creates more power, and the kinds of catastrophes they produce become more dangerous

Machines + Disaster

"This trajectory… has reached the point of entailing the emergence of an unparalleled risk… no longer connected to the surrounding environment…since it attacks rationality itself" Paul Virilio, The Original Accident

-As we move forward...the risk of catastrophe becomes more prevalent with technological progress

-Machines can break, and often break at the worst time..

**Our inability to acknowledge this means we no longer know that this obvious truth, we refuse to see the break that is coming, which is significant itself...**

-Virilio is deeply moral man, also deeply religious, ethical centre…

-Virilio case, his responsibility, his propaganda from the progress (provide him with some kind of ethical framework)

<>

Thought Technologies

We must remember instead every little digit resembles a story, that must be heard, and through them is when our responsibility is shown (rationality cannot be hidden)

Our responsibility is to the victims, and brings our responsibility into being first (make it present)= we are fundamental irresponsible (we don’t know what it means to care for others)= we longer know what responsibility means (connects conscious to actions)= our conscious/ actions need to develop, and take place…

How does one go about doing this?

-Begins with people like Virilio (his descriptions is gloomy, his analysis has hope, we have to know what the world is really like in order to know how to live in it)

Occurred because of human error? Only partly right…another reason for disasters… is to acknowledge the blindness of responsibility / *technology*= when it comes to learning about the risk of each advancement that is new, whenever we invent something new= bringing it into being (Is appose to govern modern technology?Forget the future and forget the past?)

**Refusal to acknowledge**

Integral Accidents

=Accidents are an integral aspect of every technology, and thus over time inevitable, which means accidents aren’t really a matter of causality for us, in that if we use a given technology in the rightway nothing bad will happen (USE TECHN RIGHT NOTHING BAD WILL HAPPEN)...

=Because the fact is something bad always happens...

Indeed, even if no errors are made in the production and use of a given system, stuff still breaks...

**Meaning people ensure the appearance of accidents,in so far as they create the technical conditions for accidents to occur

As the development of technology brings all possible technological catastrophes in to being over time...

Disasters will always HAPPEN

Nothing we make will last or work in a way that we hope, because there is no protection to save us from the disasters that will occur

-There are limits to what we can do/ live through…

**IF we take every step to make sure protected… we will always be prone to disasters, and human errors

Chernobyl

April 26 1986…Chernobyl happened…population of 35 thousand people…town people lived inside of it, the reactive…

Part of the reason it affected the areas around it, the reactor was not labelled…what it took to retain the action that happened?

WHAT HAPPENED AFTER THE EXPLOSION?

The soviet union…killing animals, burying, effort to guard the ruins of the power plant…

=Soviet engineers…created the plant (sarcophagus)= covering the factory in Chernobyl to keep rain water from leaking into the factory that still fosters high levels of radiation (forest fires= can make the soil soaked in radiation filter up within the air/wind, and travel)

Hostility between Russia and Ukraine (Chernobyl new safe confinement) IS THIS REALLY GOING TO FIX THE PROBLEM? WHY IS THERE NO FUNDING/ MORE AWARENESSON THE CLEAN UP PROGRAM…this is a delicate project…

Funding is tight…will they be able to afford to finish the development…

Accidents like these will never stop happening…there is no way to fix Chernobyl… can’t live there for centuries OR EVEN EVER

Silence about Chernobyl

I’ve wondered why everyone was silent aboutChernobyl, why our writers weren’t writing much about it—they write about thewar, the camps, but here they’re silent. Why? Do you they it’s an accident?

If we’d beaten Chernobyl, people would talk about it and write about it more. Orif we’d understood Chernobyl

But we don’t know how to capture any meaning from it. We’re not capable of it.

We can’t place it in our human experience or human time frame. So what’s better, to remember or to forget?

Svetlana Alexievich, Voices from Chernobylo Howdo we capture meaning from it?

-How is it better to capture? Working to contain the radiation…fire was put out after 10 days of the explosion

Silence 2

They say ‘Chernobyl’, and they write ‘Chernobyl’... But no one knows what it is...

Something frightening opened up before us. Everything is different. We aren’t born the same, we don’t die the same…how do people die after Chernobyl?

Svetlana Alexievich, Voices from Chernobyl

The experience is so extreme, remains unknown, controls you because don’t know how to describe or make of it

The event is not available to consciousness andthinking (like memory)

***Can tell us nothing, but to stay in places that have been poisoned, they now live in fear (for their own lives, and their children’s lives)

Fixing the problem?

Eventually, when the arch seals off the reactor....the plan is for giant cranes to lift out the remains of the reactor and what's left of the fuel, which melted and flowed like lava into chambers beneath it...

FEAR: the cranes would quickly become so radioactive they could not be maintained, and would gradually stop working

=There is also still no suitable nuclear wastedump in the country

Site Manager, Philippe Casse, acknowledges that getting rid of all this highly radioactive material will be far more difficult than building the arch

= “Disposal will be an even bigger project,” he says. “There is no money at the moment. It could be done in 50 years’ time. Perhaps there will be the technology to solve the problem then.”

Despite every effort to contain it, how can this really fix the problem?

Assumption no matter how catastrophic (produced by technologies we don’t really understand)= still this faith that using technology is efficient…there will be a solution to the incident…

Chernobyl + Enframing

Enframing=take what we want when we want it, and use that frame in a way in which we want it (because we think it’s our own right)

How can one capture any meaning here & hope?

Chernobyl happened, got the feeling each person’s life is separated from their own, but got you thinking about the dangers that encompass one’s life…the world that is lost cannot be put back together

The stories of ordinary people, don’t know if the stories will be similar to the ones like at Chernobyl (some have lost faith in technology)

Future + Chernobyl

The web of meaning that we discovered (our history/ meaning) founded on relations to things and others, arise not from technical means, but appears through the relationships we have affirm…the quality of these worlds does not just depend on relationships, but also how we continue those relationships/ respond to them…

Consumption + utility= personal inclinations…without the disaster that demands our attention= our daily life needs rethinking

What would it mean to ground our thinking?

The accident reveals the substance…fight against the damage done…we must look in the faces we hurt…

Mao II

-Language, images, beliefs, time, etc.

-We don’t even need catastrophes, necessarily

-We only need the reports and predictions and warnings.”

-‘I was born under the old tutelage (authority over some one/ instruction), the earlier the better,’

-The uninventable poetry, inside the pain, of what people say

Mao II=learning how to say things in a world trying to prevent you from talking

Learning to describe what we don’t know how to describe

What matters most; how technology limits what we think we’re capable of doing

What one can do to express oneself, tension between the crowd & individual, language of the masses (chants) vs. the language of the author

Art + Mao II

Andy Warhol=did not try to express an identity and with it try to express ideas to masses

Instead, he rejects expression and characteristics= his language is not his own, it is the language of media & crowds

Language of crowd= repetition and lack of individualism, social alienation

Primal terror of crowds= no individuals

**Want to get lost in the crowd….

Karen (Mao II)

EX: Karen, seems disembodied when she’s not in a crowd (meet her as a bride in mass, Mooney Wedding)

=To Brita, Karen is a ghost girl

=To Scott, she’s a fictional character from Bill’s books

=To Bill, she is the future

“[Karen] was thin-boundaried. She took it all in, she believed it all, pain, ecstasy, dog food, all the seraphic matter, the baby bliss that falls from the air. Scott stared at her and waited. She carried the virus of the future. Quoting Bill.” Don DeLillo, Mao II

Brita is the opposite…

<>

Nihilism + Mao II

News, provides an unremitting mood of catastrophe. This is where we find an emotional experience not available else where. We don’t need the novel…we only need the reports and predictions and warningsDeLillo

What matters is whether he can change people’s minds, what matters is trying to express it in words

Maybe to surpass nihilism, is to find away to talk about what we cannot talk about

Although we may not be able to overcome nihilism, we might be able to learn how to think about it

Bill Gray: writing is a way to lift yourself out of control;= “I’ve always seen myself in sentences…language has shaped my book and shaped me as a man”…

The Millennial Commune

Pure House is among a handful of businesses that are renting rooms at a premium in exchange for access to amenities, a dormlike atmosphere and an instant community

“Perspective residents answer probing questions…’highly curated community of like-minded individuals”- Ronda Kayser

People are always connected, we are shown images that tell us we are not alone, that there is nothing missing

Shingy (AOL’s chief of theory)

=The chief reason for stress: media overload

-Brands want to be breaking news, especially with the new platforms of digital interconnected devices

-David Shing (Digital Prophet, AOL) capitalizes on the patterns of the culture (what he calls curation is nihilism…)

=Communicates in poetry...

Things I learned from Shingy:

1) Spectacle is colossal and overwhelming

2) PPI don’t know who they are anymore; never felt so alone

3) Soon they'll try to “cluster” in small groups to create a more humane life world

4) You've got to get your brand in there

Poetry & Systems

A system that gets us to say what it wants us to say

To ensure the reproduction of these forces…

Threatens to destroy the world with speed inorder to stay on the path

Linguistics that support the path=apartments.com (ad campaigns)

Ironic joke of Silicon Valley, they say the samething; each new product launch “The world is changing” HOWEVER, technology is the primary weapon to ensure nothing changes…”

Exposes it as propaganda; rhetoric’s that reproduce the same narrative

Determines the shape of all our fantasies of technology imagery about power & control (the open palm)

These images control what we think technology means thus controls our views on developments on technology

We need to recognize what the images really are, to see the motives that are highly politicized (we need to pay attention to the language used for the discourse)

Input= Black box= output (what goes in and whatcomes out)

So long as what goes in, is relevant

Each machine is technically a black box we're receiving our machines…) that contain toxic material (the machine that we use and bring affect for us)

All we care about is how it works (output)

We can’t just utilize the machine we are engulfed with, they organize our lives, identity, transform the nature of our world, relationship with, and with each other

The system we tend to create holds power over us, technology has meaning, the meaning we ascribe to them, allows us to understand, not just about production, about the manufacturer of meaning (about the social practices that structure daily life)

Companies like Sony or Google= not just manufacture products, by manufacturing the future

What kind of future do we want?

Cannot live without technology?

Something learn to stance, humans= technological life (us being human cannot survive without technology)

Structure of orientation= develop and releasepower changes into the world

Tools rearrange our lives for the better or theworse

Always this happens in the interest of globalminority, not in the interest of people

What future do we want?

Theory attempts to explain experiences thatscience ignores or doesn’t take leadership in

Technology= feeling adds to that we harbourinside ourselves= again what are our options?

Despite all the problems taking space in ourworld, choosing to abandon technology, is just not a option, technology is socentral to everything we do, everything we are, is technologicalize= we are notlike other animals…

We are NO Gods

Technology is the way in which we break throughboundaries, go to the movies, read endless stories, attitudes about perception, stands in opposition to all of that << what we think we are and where weare going

We are no Gods, we are not destined to be Gods,we are people who depend on technology= this shouldn’t make us feel bad

We are not Gods, but beings who die, that shouldtake care of each other

We are talking about ways that develop the world

We have to establish a relationship (that isn’t about the accumulation of power)= why he started with Gestell because in the act of naming, our code of ethics or sense of self, so long as we continue to enframe, nothing will ever change…

Saving Power + Enframing

Still enframing, people as standing reserves (production and reproduction)= committed to different things…

Our responsibility…in us not knowing…. in difference white supremacy and patriarchal societal is built…seeing division and knowing how they work, the careful study, our only hope for building something new…cannot be divorced from what we want ourselves to be

We live in the assumption that we live in thebest of all worlds, where if capitalism is expands because human beings ourselfish (THIS ISNT THE CASE)

We live in a society that breeds from theexpense of every other quality…think about what it would me to thinkdifferently, besides breeding selfishly

One of the ways we can develop ourselves/ world=to rethink the meaning of technology that is disconnected from enframing…

Underlying the dangers of technology… why thepropaganda process is produced for the global minority?

Nothing wrong with the world as it is…. Deathand catastrophe is its products…

Saving Power + Danger

We look into the danger and see the growth of the saving power.Through this we are not yet saved...

But we are there upon summoned to hope in the growing light of the saving power. How can this happen? Here and now in little things, that we may foster the saving power in its increase. This includes holding always before our eyes the extreme danger.”Martin Heidegger, “The QuestionConcerning Technology”

Warning us about technology

Too late to do either

Saving power feeling you get that you cannot ignore, feeling that does come from others, but elsewhere

Feelings that tend to ruin all your plans

The saving power would give cult to responsibility one would respond without consequence

Saving power is not something that will save us

Even when we look directly at the danger…. the saving powerdoesn’t not appear

Saving Power + Ursula K. Le Guin, “The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas”

The place they go towards is a place even less imaginable than the city of happiness. I cannot describe it at all. It is possible that it does not exist. But they seem to know where they are going, the ones who walk away from Omelas.”Ursula K. Le Guin, “The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas”

Knowing the one they built will be different…each along they go west and east…the place they go towards is a place less imaginable…they seem to know where they are going…the ones that walk away and their decision to leave…the moment of their leaving did not exist...that another world is possible

We only need to learn to relay on each other…

Not our collection of technology= what matters is Heidegger take on the little things…

Despite the power, the conditions are still alive, and the willingness, that life doesn’t have to be just like this…

Capacity to realize some sense of self

Choosing to build something better

Learning to exercise and reorganize how we livein the present

The saving power is really the essence of whatit means to be human

Fundamental of any understanding of humanfreedom· We are struggling, the love we have for eachother cannot come into being without the realization of the actualcircumstances
