Macbeth (Act 1)

Scene 1


The three witches plan to meet Macbeth after the battle.



Scene 2


The Thane of Cawdor is caught guilty. Duncan decrees execution for the Thane of Cawdor and Macbeth, who victoriously won the war, be made the Thane of Cawdor.

Scene 3


The three witches carry out their plot as they make honoring prophecy on Macbeth and Banquoe's fate. They predict that Macbeth will one day be king of Scotland and Banquoe's children would be kings. They call Macbeth the thane of Glamis and Cawdor, leaving Macbeth confused because he hasn't heard of Duncan's decision yet.

Angus and Ross full fill the witches first prophecy as they inform Macbeth of Duncan's decision to make him that Thane of Cawdor. Macbeth ponders if he would be handed the crown or if he would have to fight for it.

Scene 4


Macbeth is pleased with the tittle of Thane of Cawdor. However, he sees Malcolm, son of Duncan, a rival for the crown.

Scene 5


Lady Macbeth slyly persuades her husband, Macbeth to do whatever it takes to win the crown. She then presses Macbeth to murder the king and says the king "shall sun that morrow see!". In other words, the king will never see tomorrow.





Scene 6


Macbeth is skeptical about his wife's plan and thinks decides to ponders about it. Later, Duncan, the Scottish king, arrives at Macbeth's castle for an arranged dinner.

Scene 7


Macbeth reconsiders his wife plan and after some reflection decides to drop the plan because there is no real reason to kill Duncan. However, Lady Macbeth is stubborn and argues that Macbeth should stick with the plan to murder the king. Subsequently, Macbeth is convinced and sticks to the original plan to murder Duncan.
