revolution ?

Ebert asked for help off the Freikorps (ex WW1 soldiers paid to help the government keep order) because although they hated the WR they hated communists more. Therefore they stopped the rebellion killing the spartacist leaders

How did the Weimar constitution work and what were the rules ?


- Everyone over age of 20 could vote


- People voted for MP's who would sit in the Reichstag


- The Reichstag would suggest and vote on new laws


- The Chancellor is head of the Reichstag and would be voted for every 4 years


- The President would choose the Chancellor and be voted for every 7 years

Strengths of the Weimar constitution ?


- Fair


- Allowed citizens to have a say


- Local issues would be addressed


- Wouldn't allow one person to take over


- A poor Chancellor or President would only be around for a limited amount of time


Weaknesses of the Weimar constitution ?


- Proportional representation: meant there were loads of different parties in the Reichstag - difficult to come to agreements


- Article 48 could be abused


- State governments could pass laws that went against Reichstag

Explain the events of the Kapp Putsch ?

The Freikorps went against the Weimar Republic in 1920 when they supported Wolfgang Kapp in his attempt to take over the country (Kapp Putsch). However the Putsch failed because Ebert paid the workers to go on strike therefore stopping the Putsch. This is because Wolfgang realised he needed the support of the workers which he did not have.

A Weimar politician who was assassinated, because he signed the armistice

- Gave them a new flag e.g the swastika

Explain the events of the Munich putsch

- Hitler marches into beer hall with SA & a gun


- Local leaders in the room were threatened and promised to support Hitler (the next day the changed their mind)


- Hitler still marched into town where the army and police were ready for him. There was some fighting but Hitler fled the scene


- A few days later he was arrested
