Who was the leader of the Mormans and what did they believe about their leader?

Brigham Young lead the Mormans and they believed he was chosen by God to lead them. They believed him as they were very religious.

There were often fights because men became attached to certain prostitutes and we're drunk from alcohol. Many prospectors carried guns, any violence was a threat to other camps.

The land rush was when in 1887 the Dawes act gave plains indians land. All the land that was leftover was put up for general sale.

What happened in the cow town Abilene, Kansas?

Population boomed from 500 to 7,000 and it was a lawless kown. A jail was constructed but then emediatly torn down. There were many gun fights and when the guns were banned the sign banning them was shot down.

It was in 1876, it happened on June 22nd and lasted until 27th June.

What were the events occurring on the Battle of Little Big Horn?

The US government offered to buy the Sioux for $6 million or $40,000 a year. Custer and his men crossed the rosebud Creek to surprise the Sioux and attack them. When the battle was done Custer and the 7th Calvary stripped the bodies naked and mutilated them.

They mutilated the bodies by cutting of their heads.

The plains indians done a ghost dance because they were unhappy on the reservations as the us government were starving them. The white Americans were frightened and therefore killed them.

The Exoduster movement was when certain people beleived in reaching a promised land and this particular movement was the African American slaves who moved to Kansas.

40,000 travelled to Kansas

What was the open range?

Cattle overstocking became a huge problem and they had to lower the cost of cattle.

What consequence where there of the open range?

Cattle ranches had to get smeller when drought hit them. Prices of beef where cheap so people couldnt make as much money. It could be a positive consequence as it meant poor family could eat. Surviving battle would be in poor condition.


What were reservations ?

They were sections of land that the plains indians were placed in to live and stay. They should have been provided for with the appropriate resources.

White settlers complained they were to big and got them made smaller.


Bureau Agents in charge were currupt and cheated the plains indians.

What events occurred at the sand Creek massacre? (1864)

On November 29th 1864, 150 Sioux were murdered by colonel chivington. The army came from the East. Women and children hid in the bushes and when they were found they were mutilated.

Why did the sand creep massacre occur?

It happened because the white american settlers where crossing into the plains Indians reservations after they signed a treaty. The government wanted a new treaty to keep peace between the 2 sides.

This was when the plains indians were fighting back in the reservations in order to survive by stealing food and resources.

What was president grants peace policy?

It was out of to calm tention by improving the management of the reservation system. A budget of $2 million was to make sure the plain had enough food on the reservations .

What was the Dawes act? (1887)

It was to give the plain indians there own land similar to homesteads but the plain indians families got 160 acres of land. Single indians were granted 80 and orphans under 18 were granted 40.

Why was the Dawes act set up? (1887)

Because the plain indians were becoming to dependant on the government to find them food as they couldn't farm in the bad conditions. The government gave them independence by giving them land.

They had to live there and Lear as an American citizen they weren't aloud to speak about their own culture or even in their language . If they di they were punished.

It was when railroads were built in plains indians land which speed up travelling which only took a day and before that it took around 6 months.

A group of civil war deserters, conmen and thieves who terrorised the local communities in the West.

How did farmers use Ploughing in farming?

The soil was difficult to farm due to the deep tangled roots and normal ploughs broke. Farmers had to dig the land by hand and equipment was expensive.

Pipes would pump water from underground onto crops. which is only useful for areas with water underground.

Prepared the soil by trapping water under the soil and worked well with wheat.

Explain the impact of grasshoppers on the plains?

Vast amounts swept over plains and could kill many crops. they could take the wool of cattle and may even block the sun.

Put around crops to stop animals getting in and trampling on the crops.

When was the homestead act and what did it achieve?

In 1862, and was made to promote settlement in the West. Made land really cheap to buy.
