4 reasons that the Soviet Union could take control in eastern europe

-There was a political vacuum: This meant that Stalin could help communist parties into power


-The Soviet Union was needed to restore law and order after WW2


-European economies were shattered and Stalin could take over industry.


-Stalin wanted to defend the USSR and this was his perfect excuse


How were the people of eastern Europe affected by the Soviet control?

Freedom- They lost freedom of speech, newspapers were censored, non communists were put in prison and people were forbidden from traveling to Western Europe



Wealth- while eastern european economies initially recovered up until 1955- wages were behind that in other countries and they were forbidden from applying for Marshall aid from the USA



Consumer goods- long after the war the people of eastern Europe still had shortages of milk, coal and meat. Clothing was expensive and items that were common in the west such as televisions and radios could not be gotten

How was Krushchev (president from 1955-64) different to Stalin?

He wanted a peaceful coexistence with the west



Ended feuds with China and Yugoslavia



Said he wanted to improve standards of living



Planned to reduce expenditure on arms



Attended summits with the USA, France and Britain

What was destalinisation and how was it acheived?

After Krushchevs secret speech attacking Stalin in 1956 he decided to move the USSR away from Stalin



He did this by: ending cominform


Releasing political prisoners


Pulling troops out of Austria


Inviting Tito to Moscow


Dismissing Stalin's Foreign minister Molotov


Giving eastern Europe more freedom

Why was there discontent in Hungry?

The hard line communist leader Rakosi imposed many restrictions- Hungarians hated how there were Soviet troops in their country, they hated the secret police, their lack of freedom of speech and the Russian street signs schools and shops

How did the Hungarian uprising start ?

A group in the communist party opposed Rakosi and Moscow retired him. The new leader Gero is no more accepted by the people and on the 23rd of October a huge statue of Stalin was torn down in Budapest .

He could not tolerate the leaving if the Warsaw pact and consequently sent thousands of Soviet tanks and troops to Budapest killing around 3000 Hungarians who fought

Janos Kadar was put in charge of Hungary


35000 anti communists were arrested and 300 were executed
